Professional Review:
Just as Green Day aped the Ramones, their contemporaries in this Southern California punk quartet aspired to be the Clash. But also like Green Day, Rancid's fresh approach and excellent songs (including the ska-punk MTV hit "Time Bomb" and the anthemic "Roots Radicals") rose far above tribute-band level. And poet Jim Carroll (The Basketball Diaries) adds spoken-word stream-of-consciousness to the dour "Junkyman." While 19 songs makes this 1995 CD drag on a bit too long, Wolves is evidence of punk rock's relevance a full two decades after the Sex Pistols. --Steve Knopper

   Summary: Great album.
I think people who claim to dislike this album are either giant snobs or totally lying. Or both.

This album is a classic from a band that was the cornerstone of the 90s punk revival. In an era of punk that was fairly flaky, Rancid still stands out as one of the more genuine acts.

Fact is, "Out Come The Wolves" is an enjoyable album, filled with top-notch punk music. They may not be innovative at what they do, but Rancid does it really really well.

Summary: might as well enjoy it...
Like them or loathe them, Rancid is passionate about music. This album is 4 friends playing music they love and it ends up sounding like it.

Is it innovative or original? No... but the band puts their soul into this stuff and it gels quite well on this particular offering. If there's any doubt to my comments play "Journey to the End of East Bay" a few times in a row. My bet is that Mr. Tim Armstrong has not had a charmed life and this music is his outlet. His band made an enjoyable record here... it doesn't re-invent the wheel or significantly change the world for that matter, but it makes a long drive to work on a rainy Monday morning less dreary when you can sing along with these 4 guys and not have to hit the "skip" button...

So in a way it does change the world for the better.

Summary: this really isn't a review just a thought
I started reading some of these reviews and the whole "rip-off"/"wannabe" clash thing came up a lot. Yes this record in particular does have a lot of clash influence. but than again were SLF heavily influenced by the clash as well? and weren't the clash influenced by the ramones? then again who wasn't?

Summary: Not for the "punk was dead in 1986" types.
First off, to all the jaded and grumpy punk elitists, I feel for you. I really do. Punk is probably the most afflicted of any music genre. But if your sole purpose of writing a review is to "school" the ignorant and tell Rancid fans to listen to Op Ivy and The Descendants and The Ramones and Bad Religion etc, you're wasting your time.

On to the album. It's great. Sure it's classicist and hardly innovative, but the energy and convinction of which Rancid tears through this 19 song set makes them easily forgiveable. This is probably in one of the top 10 records of the decade. The catchy songcraft and thoughtful lyrics are sure to win over any fan of punk. Although the musicianship isn't as strong as Life Won't Wait, (my personal favorite Rancid album) it's still better than most of its peers.

The only "bad" thing about the album is that it's a bit frontloaded. Most of the best tracks are in the front half of the album, and the second half can get a bit repetetive, with Old Friend and As Wicked being the standouts of the second half.

If you remove the stigma of being called Clash rip-offs and "selling out" and just enjoy the album for what it is, you'll find yourself listening to some truly enjoyable punk and ska tunes.

Summary: Rancid's best; probably among punk rock's best
I really don't have much to say about this album other than it should be in EVERY rock fan's collection; you don't have to be a punk fan to enjoy it and if you are punk fan, it has a general appeal but still refrains from betraying punk rock's ideals. A song by song breakdown:

Maxwell Murder 7/10- Not great but it is a solid opening.

The 11th Hour 7/10- Still not a great song but is catchy and fits into the album very well.

Roots Radicals 10/10- One of the best songs off of this disc. Catchy and well put together but still has that "punk rock" energy and feel about it.

Time Bomb 10/10- My favorite song off of the CD. Extremely catchy and one of those songs that is hard to get tired of. I have played this song to many people (both punk rock fans and non-punk fans) and have yet to find a person who doesn't like it.

Olympia WA 8/10- Good song. Catchy and simple.

Lock, Step, and Gone 8/10- Again, a catchy tune. Isn't as "punk" in the whole thing but it is a good, solid tune.

Junkie Man 6/10- Not terrible but nothing special. Probably the closest thing to filler on the CD.

Listed M.I.A. 8/10- A good song that makes you want to clap along. As many of the songs are, this is one of those punk songs that can have a good appeal beyond punk fans.

Ruby Soho 10/10- One of the albums marqee songs and after hearing it youll know why. The chorus isn't bad but is nothing special, however, the chorus will be stuck in your head for weeks.

Daly City Train 8/10- Good song that has a catchy chorus.

Journey to the End of the East Bay 8/10- The intro is nothing special but when the singing starts it becomes a very good song.

She's Automatic 7/10- A solid track but not a standout on this album. Has a good "punk" feel to it.

Old Friend 8/10- Has some of the ska sound to it like "Time Bomb" and is a hooky song that is enjoyable but not quite one of the great songs on the album

Disorder and Disarray 7/10- Not a very good verse but a pretty good chorus.

The Wars End 9/10- Kind of seems a little emotional I guess. It's a repetative song but the fact that its only about 2 minutes long keeps it from getting annoying

You Don't Care Nothin' 8/10- Another one of those tracks that I believe is good but not quite a standout. This is, however, the favorite song off of this album for many people.

As Wicked 10/10- I didn't care much for this song at first but I slowly grew into it and now it is one of my favorites.

Avenues and Alleyways 10/10- Very catchy and it has a good anti-racist message behind it. This is one of the songs that not everyone knows but is great.

The Way I Feel 7/10- Not a bad song, but in my opinion the album should have been closed out with Avenues and Alleyways. It just doesn't feel right to close on this song.
