Summary: By The Way should be called Under The Radar
Rock music around 2002 was in dire need of melody coming back into the fold after years of non-melodic percussive beats on fuzz guitars and lyrics that stunk of ignorant trailer park babblings which was found in Godsmack, Korn and Linkin Park's god-awful spoiled brat mumbo-jumbo. The Chili Peppers offered the alternative with By The Way and it seems like it broke ground with allowing melody to creep back into music. Californication did it somewhat, but that one was too "Blood Sugar-ish". By The Way got it right. Green Day's American Idiot gets a lot of credit for putting catchy melody back into rock, but I feel By The Way kicked it off while being under the radar, hence people not knowing at the time that's what it was doing. Sort of like how Sgt. Pepper is credited with ethereal sonic orgies in the late 60's when in reality Pet Sounds got it moving. I'd say By The Way is the Chili's best since B.S.S.M. Or even better because the maturity is obvious yet it's fun, catchy and the lyrics have quite a bit of meaning. Most of the credit goes to Brian Wilson/Jimi Hendrix guru Chili guitarist John Frusciante for taking those two very different influences and melting them together perfectly with this album. If you like Green Day (post Nimrod), Killers, The Who, White Stripes, Beach Boys (post cars 'n surf) or Pink Floyd, get By The Way. You won't be disappointed. It's probably one of the most colorful and warm sounding albums since Nirvana's Nevermind.

Summary: Good, in fact very good, not the best
This disc has got some great songs on it, By the Way, Can't Stop and some good songs. The Zephyr song and Universally Speaking sound a lot alike but are really nice songs to relax and listen too. Throw Away Your Television and Cabron are also fun songs. The bass line that Flea invents on Throw Away Your Television is great and I like the idea behind the song.
There are some fun songs, but overall the CD has a more thoughtful, almost depressed feel to it. Venice Queen is a song for Anthony's late vocals mentor, yet still has a lot of life in it. This CD shows many different angles that the Peppers can play from and is a must for a fan and anyone who likes the Red Hot kind of music.

Summary: different, but still EXTREMELY GOOD.
I just purchased this cd and I'm a big fan of the Chili Peppers. I've been buying there cd's since I was 8, but in no particular order, so i haven't really witnessed the gradual change in their style, but now I see it. The difference in sound between By The Way and Blood Sugar Sex Magic is big, but it's still fantastic music. In By The Way, there's almost no "funk"-type music that the Chili Peppers made in their early days. By The Way contains a more alternative rock-type sound overall, which is by no means a bad thing- RHCP can pull off both sounds. I LOVE this album. It really shows you their artistic ability to change their sound a little but still stay true to themselves. If I could I'd give this album 6 stars.

   Summary: Great album
When I first listened to this cd I was very disappointed. I had recently become a fan with Californication and at that time I had also bought Blood Sugar Sex Magik (I have all their albums now). So I listened to the opening track, By the Way, and liked it a lot. But the rest of the songs were too poppy for me. I was very sad and I thought that the energy from their previous albums was now completely gone. A few days passed and I decided to give it another chance. I picked a song at random and it turned out to be "On Mercury". I loved it. I couldn't believe I hadn't liked it the first time. And so I decided to listen to the whole album again, and while I didn't like all of the songs, I did start to appreciate them a little more. It took me a little time but I ended up loving this album. I now have it as one of my personal favorites and I now realize that their energy wasn't gone at all, but it had just transformed into something new, while keeping its beauty. Buy it if you have an open mind and desire to listen to truly great and profound music.

   Summary: Clearly the Best...
I absolutely love the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and this by far is their best album.

If you don't want to buy the entire album (which you should), then at least download these songs...

By The Way
Universally Speaking
The Zephyr Song
Can't Stop
I Could Die For You
Throw Away Your Television

Overall, I'd tell you to buy the album any day, than to download just those songs, because I love everything about this album.
