Summary: Works good at firs, better when you get the hang of it I began using my AeroPress about a year ago when my employer dropped support for our coffee club. I am so glad they did. After a year of use and experimentation, I have some comments in reply to other's problems. Begin with following the recommendations that come with the press. I have varied everything and ended up back close to the beginning. Use proper water temperature. Too hot increases bitterness. To cold lacks flavor. Leaving the water in the chamber too long increases bitterness, not really the flavor. Only put in the amount of water recommended, too much water also increases chances of bitterness and a kind of sour tinge. (Over extraction?) I always use very fine grind, making a single cup, using ~180 deg. water, in the amount recommended, brew about 10 seconds (stirring with the supplied stirrer so it doesn't disturb the filter), and press very hard. Once I learned the right temperature, I use the same amount of water each day, microwaved for the same time to get the same temperature each time. (Consistency is a good thing to get a consistent, quality cup.) When I pour the water into the press, some dribbles out at first, (a common complaint I have seen) but so what; it just goes into the cup. I use one filter for a week, and then throw it out. It is easy to rinse off the tiny bit of coffee that sticks, pat dry a little and replace in the filter cap. Sometimes I forget and use two weeks. No difference. When it comes out good (which it nearly always does, now that I know what to do and not do) I notice there is a foam on the bottom of the filter cap. While this may or may not be the same as the "crema" from an espresso machine, I notice its presence is usually a sign of a good cup. My thought is, this is from the oils in the coffee, and if it goes too long or is too hot, other products are extracted that cut the foaming like an anti-foaming agent. These other products are what make the coffee bitter. The oil is the flavor. The only drawback is, if you are after the caffeine, it is bitter, so you have to choose. Great flavor, no caffeine, or bitter with caffeine. Or, like some people, maybe you like the bitterness. With this little gem you can dial in your preference by varying temperature, amount of water, or length of brew. Your choice. Oh yes, on care: just wash it out; I always wipe the rubber end of plunger to remove any residue so it doesn't add bitterness to later cups, and store plunger outside the chamber. Storing the plunger in the chamber keeps the rubber end compressed leading to not as good of a seal when plunging. Also you obviously want to use a sturdy mug with a flat base, not a dainty tapered teacup, and press straight down. Summary: Pretty darn foolproof way to get a delicious cup of coffee Update: I tried this press with some Cafe Mam Tango blend (ground on #4 of their rating system) this morning. Oh, My, God. This was one of the best cups of coffee I have ever had. After a few weeks of use of this, I have found that I can use water that came to a boil & cooled a bit, I don't measure the temperature. I also found that I can just stir the coffee & water slurry around until it feel like its done, I don't count 20 seconds out. But, I do find that I need to stick with their recommendation of how much coffee to use and how much water to use. Any deviations there made a not-as-good, but still decent, cup of coffee. *~*~*~ I probably read about 500 different reviews on this product before buying it because I could not believe that something as simple looking as this could really make a good cup of coffee. It does, it definitely does. I have had only two cups of coffee with this so far an I am very impressed. It is as easy to use as the directions say. I am using a hazelnut flavored store-brand coffee that I ground at the store, extra fine but not espresso fine. For the first cup I made, I used the exact temperature for the water that was recommended, and a bit less coffee than it said because I thought it sounded like a lot of coffee. I also didn't stir the water around for very long because I couldn't quite believe it wasn't going to make a too-strong cup of coffee. My cup was weak, but still tasty. Cup #2 this morning: two scoops of coffee, and I let the water in my hot pot come to almost a boil, I didn't bother to check the temperature. Filled the chamber to the "2" and gave it a good stir for about 20 seconds or so. Push into cup, dilute with the rest of the hot water for my "americano" style, add my usual cream and sugar, and YUM! This cup was perfect. No bitterness, just the right strength. Clean up is as easy as they say, too. And heck, I'm even re-using my paper filter for a few times, just because they said I could. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to make a very satisfying cup of coffee. It requires just about the same effort needed to set up a typical drip coffee maker to make a pot of coffee, and makes a far better cup. Summary: Simple, Straightforward and Great Coffee I came, I searched, I saw, I bought and now my coffee tastes better than Starbucks. I had two perfect non-fat Lattes this morning and I'm surprised and very pleased. Good stuff. No more visits to the local drive thru. I can make it right in my thermal mug and head on down the road. I am a happy traveler indeed. I followed the directions to a T and the coffee is every bit as good as the other reviewers mentioned. Easy to make, easy to clean - what more could I ask for? Thanks for a great product. Summary: im in Love I have found true love. What a simple and genius invention. I save so much $ in coffe grinds and since I already had a Sunbeam "HOTSHOT" , ...I get a fresh brewed mug of coffee/espresso in less than 2 mins. Clean up is a dream!!!!!!!!!! This can be taken anywhere!!! Get it ! Summary: great little coffee maker I'm completely sold on this little gizmo. Best coffee I have ever had, and it is small enough to take on just about any trip. The only problem is that I am far less tolerant of lousy coffee now! |
