Summary: Super criminal who does not do violence "Artemis Fowl" by Eoin Colfer, ©2001 I could not help thinking, "What if he had to hurt or even kill someone or something? Could he do it?" He is presented as a merciless criminal, and he is performing as such, but the situation is not developed that he would have to make such a choice. But he is only twelve years old, so the question is could he? I always enjoy these teenager stories. They are so interesting and the stories are generally pretty good. This is the story of a little boy genius following in his fathers footsteps. His father was a criminal mastermind. His mother is distraught by is disappearance a year or so before the story. Artemis Fowl acquires, by a bit of deceit a book of the elves, gnomes, dwarves, etc. With this book he concocts to get hold of a bunch of gold. He underestimates the power of the elves. They underestimate his power. In the end everyone is happier, though the elves are a bit poorer. He gets his mother healed by the power of one of the elfs. Summary: Creative and FUN! I've read the 5 books of this series and cannot wait for the 6th! This author has a wonderful imagination and sense of humor! The earth-eating, flatulent Mulch Diggums is my favorite character! I wonder who'll be cast to play his part in the movie? hmmm Summary: Here's to great new beginnings!! CHEERS I was optimistic, and I wasn't let down! My only complaint was that the story was too short, I couldn't wait to see what Artemis would be up to next. I would not compare this to Harry Potter. This story stands on its own, with plenty of installments to keep you reading and waiting on the next adventure. Always full of surpises, written very well. Summary: Definitely in my Top Five Enthralling. Colifer engages you from start to finish. Not only is Artemis Fowl II one of my favorite characters of all time, but he also gives us one of those rare opportunities to have the antagonist as our main character. When both sides are getting down and dirty you start thinking of the whole thing as a free-for-all, but every time you take a step back you realize that Artemis is actually the villain. And Colifer still has you rooting for him all the way. Extremely clever in all respects, with witty dialogue and witty narration, I can hardly even imagine someone putting it down. You couldn't accuse Colifer of unoriginality either, for his high-tech city-dwelling fairies are unique and refreshing. I find Colifer to be amazingly creative. Who would have thought that the "Lep" in Leprechaun (or LEPrecon and Colifer spells it) stood for Lower Elements Police? In summary, the characters are well-developed and engaging, the plot is fast-paced and intense, and Colifer has stuffed its 304 pages with wit, humor, creativity and cleverness. I don't give five stars lightly, but this book has definitely earned them. Summary: "I am Gary Stu, and I'll show them all!" I'm going to go out on a limb here. Let me get right to the point: This is a terrible book. Harsh? Maybe, but that's how it is. About the time Artemis Fowl hit the market, I heard it claimed that Eoin Colfer was 14 when he wrote it. On some simple checking of dates, the claim seems unlikely (he was 36 when it was published). But the book is so badly written that it's believable. If this was fanfic, everyone would be pointing at the protagonist and shouting "Gary Stu! Gary Stu!" (If that doesn't ring any bells, try looking up "Mary Sue" instead.) The descriptive style ... well, what can one say about the descriptive style? Phil Foglio uses some very similar characterisations in his Myth books. (Compare Guido and Nunzio to Fowl's butler, for example.) The difference is, Foglio is writing humorous -- and occasionally risqué -- parody (and doing a good job of it) ... but Colfer is serious. And it just doesn't work. The characters are cardboard and flat; the plot is predictable and stereotyped, and yet manages to strain even a teenager's willing suspension of disbelief with its excesses of "But wait, there's more." Granted, this is supposed to be "young adult" fiction. But so is Harry Potter; and the qualkity of writing and plot development in Harry Potter are so far above Artemis Fowl that there's scarcely any comparision. I know if anyone had given me a copy of Artemis Fowl when I was a "young adult", I'd have been insulted that they thought my reading level was so low. |
