Summary: If I'm a danger to myself just think what I could do to you...
Otep's (r)evolution continues...

Few times have I seen a CD get pushed back as much as Otep's The Ascension has. But, we can say, without a shadow of a doubt, that it was well worth the wait.

One of the best things about Otep is the fact that they evolve with each new release. Sevas Tra was mainly heavy with a few melodic parts. House of Secrets dealt more with the eery side with some standout heavy parts. And now, with The Ascension, the heaviness rules supreme again but the eeriness is always palpable and seems as if it could show up at any time.

Then there's Otep's lyrics. My God. I've heard some intense lyrics but I really doubt many could hold a flame to Otep. There's not a lot of new ground broken, she deals mainly with the same topics (God, religion, self-abuse, etc.) but she does it with such a flare that it evokes as much emotion in us as the previous CDs have. As for the vocals, they saw a major change from Sevas Tra to House of Secrets, and there's more change introduced to us with The Ascension. Maybe it was because I haven't heard anything new from them in so long but I thought her voice had changed significantly. With further listens though, it really hasn't. Her roars are still insane, her rap-ish moments are still tastefully done, and her singing--yeah I said it--is actually pretty good, resembling Poe a little.

As with every Otep CD, the music is always intense, whether it's heavy or just a piano, there's always that feeling of dread and creepiness. Special mention musically goes to Milk of Regret. The simple guitar melody mixed with the tribal drumming works wonders for the song. It begins slow but just completely erupts towards the end, classic Otep.

Every fan of Otep, whether you were around from Sevas Tra--or the Jihad EP--or just discovered them after House of Secrets was released, everyone will find salvation in this CD. The Blood Pig-esque songs are definitely here. See Eet The Children, Crooked Spoons, Noose & Nail, and March of the Martyrs. The Warhead-esque songs are here. See Confrontation and Home Grown. Then there's the slow-to-fast songs like Milk of Regret, Ghostflowers, and Invisible. Heck, we even get a radio-worthy (if only, God knows Otep would bring some much needed originality to it) track in Perfectly Flawed.

Pay special attention to Otep's version of the Nirvana classic, Breed. It has every oportunity to be corny, unneeded, and flat out stupid, but for some reason they really pull it off and pay a great homage to it.

My favorite songs are Crooked Spoons, Perfectly Flawed, Milk of Regret, Noose & Nail, and March of the Martyrs. Otep is finally back and demanding attention. Few will give The Ascension the due it truly deserves but this ranks right up there with the best CDs of 2007 for sure. Each song begs repeated listens and the CD as a whole is easy to listen to fully. There's a little something for every different brand of metalhead out there. Highly recommended.

Summary: Otep Finally Molds What They Were Meant To Be
I've been into for a couple years now I'd have to say. A little history first:
Sevas Tra was a solid album. It had the aggression most metal bands do, often times in the form of boring, dull poetic interludes for each song... sometimes the entire song being just that. House Of Secrets was a significantly stronger album. Still very masterfully poetic, but in a more exciting manner so that the band could still display their musicianship.

On The Ascension, however, things have changed for the better. Poetic: Hell yes. No boring parts of this CD. Pure excitement the entire wya through. The musical talent is much more spread out now, clearly being able to hear thumping drums, the screeching guitar, Otep's emotional vocals, and especially Evil Jay's impressive bass lines. Don't think even for a second the band has lightened up for their fans on this album. True, stated by a reviewer already, "Perfectly Flawed" is Otep's first actual slow song to date that isn't only a spoken word sermon. The song "Ghostflowers", already known by most people regardless of ownership of the album, still remains a solid track. They also cover the Nirvana song "Breed", which seems to be a solid cover (although I am not at all a fan of Nirvana). Displayed still is the talent and poetry in motion. Gone finally is the dull, unnecessarily boring spoken word parts of the previous albums, and the cheap modern metal sound of drowned out guitar distortion. Here at last is the appreciation of all musicians in the band.

Worth your time: You bet.
Your money?: Yes. Oh yes.
The time your eyes will spend having uncomfortable objects in them to avoid getting screamed at for blaring that darned teenage rubbish?: Priceless.
Foreverything else, there's Otep.

   Summary: MARCH OF THE MARTYRS!!!!!!
Great album, I love this cd. I mean I had to wait so long for the cd to come out in stores, I even put down $5 towards it on March 20th (the day the cd was dated to come out) and waited and waited but now its here! And like I said before this is a great album from begining to end, every song on it is good. I just bought it today with the new bloodsimple cd because they both just came out today, and it was cheap to get them both at F.Y.E. I do have to admit tho, i've already heard it lots of times, i mean it took so long to come out, so when i found it about 2 months ago i had to burn it to see what it was going to sound like. The only thing was my 1st song was MARCH OF THE MARTYRS!!!, and i was hooked from there on, oh yea, my songs on the old cd were mixed up but they were all there, and now I'm listening to it on the real store bought cd and loving every second of it all over again. sorry otep, for burning it before it came out, but I also went and bought it the day it came out, so I think that should even things out, can't wait to see where you go, and what you do next.

Summary: This chick has some demons...
After being pushed back for what seemed like an ETERNITY, Otep's "The Ascension" is finally unleashed. Its pretty much good old fasion Otep. Pounding drums, intriquet basslines by the very talented Evil J, heavy, fast riffs and of course, the tortured, frantic shrieks and screams that we all know and love. And whats this? A mainstream sounding slow song for Otep? PIANO? Thats right folks. Check out "Perfectly Flawed". Very disturbing lyrics about self mutilation and loathing translated into a suprisingly beautiful song...especially for this band. Lyrically as well, as usual, this album is gold. I gave it 4 out of 5 because although being a big step up from "House of Secrets", it still lacked the overall...raw emotion (?) that made "Sevas Tra" a favorite to me. Either way you look at it, this album is indeed amazing. Check it out.

ART SAVES.

   Summary: WOOHOO!
After a long agonizing wait for Otep fans, The Ascension is finally unleashed. And it's out of this world. With gothic melodies of "Invisible" and "Perfectly Flawed" she yet again blows me away with her poetic words. Different from the other albums, another FANTASTIC album from Otep!
