Summary: This is just one of those albums you must have
What is it about this woman's voice? After listening to a few songs, all the woman would have to say is, "Follow me around the world..." I'd darned sure go!

Seriously, this is a very good collection of songs, and I don't think anyone except Astrud could do them justice.

   Summary: Pure Nostalgia
I first heard Astrud Gilberto's music as a teen becoming a woman, and did not then understand the combination of emotions I experienced: my own innocence, a strange longing tinged with sadness and loneliness, and yet such promise of sensuality! She sang what I felt and was unable to express.
Her "Summer Samba" I consider to be the best rendition, not to mention the classic "Ipanema" and the deeply nostalgic "Meditation".
I hear her now and the years just melt away, but now I understand the haunting power behind her impeccable phrasing, decisive blue-notes and an almost child-like, waifish but sensual interpretation of some great music.

If you can, listen to Joao Gilberto's "Wave"; it's a treat!

Summary: Music IS the cosmic dust
After reading all the heated reviews of this and other Astrid Gilberto recordings, we all need to remember that there are many tastes and many styles. We need to also remember that there are many deserving and talented musicians (John Handy for one) who haven't gotten the acclaim they deserve, whatever the reason. And aren't the charts and CD bins loaded with utter ca that will NEVER stand the test of time and true talent?
That being said, this is a lovely recording, and Astrid Gilberto doesn't make the mistake many singers do---that being recording of material beyond her understanding or talent. Her breathy, simple attack is deceptively disarming. Put this one on while you're sipping a cool libation on a warm summer night---perfection. While she may have overshadowed her then hubby when she first recorded, perhaps there was a reason. Her direct approach, the seductiveness of Brazilian rhythms and the bossa nova sound have garnered many new fans.
If you want to hear something a bit more 'authentic' but still in the same style, give a listen to Gal Costa---she truly has an amazing voice and interperative command of Brazilian music. I heard her once on the radio and made a beeline for the Tower Records on Ventura Blvd. in Sherman Oaks. That was 12 years ago, and I still love her voice.
Some music evokes a time or place, some defines an era or genre. 'The girl from Ipanema' will forever evoke the '60's samba/bossa nova/soft sultry jazz, true talent or no. Well worth the price of admission....but that's just MY opinion...:)

   Summary: THE GUY????
"The Guy" who sings in Portugese on Girl From Ipanema happens to be one of the featured artists on the original recording. His name is also Gilberto. Joao Gilberto. Astrud's husband then. He is a legend. I agree with the comments about nastiness but understand the frustration somewhat. If you don't know the history of the lady or the genre then it's hard to take the seemingly 'la-de-da' reviews for her with any weight. I think it's great that folks come to Brazilian music any way they can. I suspect the Brazilian gentleman meant that her voice is "generally despised", not her as a human being. I could be wrong though.

   Summary: Great artist, great lady
On top of my love for her music (which dates back - too many years - to when I was in my teens) I just once had the pleasure of meeting this charming lady. I intruded on her relaxation time between sets at a New York club, and she was gracious enough to spend a few minutes speaking with me -- without the slightest hint of impatience. The mark of a star, in my book.
