 Written on November 3, 2006 Summary: Beethoven's Wig is VERY BIG My family loves this CD. It's wonderful to hear my children 3, 5, and 11 year old singing along with classical music. Even better, they recognize the music when they hear it outside of the CD and know the names of the composers. I just ordered the 2nd and 3rd CDs in the series and cannot wait to listen to them!  Written on August 31, 2006 Summary: I'd rather watch Bugs Bunny cartoons I borrowed this disc from a co-worker. Initially, IO was interested in this disc because it seemed like it could be a very clever way to introduce classical music to children. I tried to like it, but I found the singers very cloying and saccharine sweet. The lyrics created for the music were very ricky-ticky and not very creative. Perhaps it is best used with very young children, but my students were less than impressed with the selections available on this disc. When introducing classical music to young children, I have found it is not necessary to find cutesy versions of the music with silly lyrics put to them. Watching old Bugs Bunny cartoons (quite a few use classical music as their background) caught my students attention and interest a lot more than the music on this disc did. Written on July 14, 2006 Summary: Kids love it I have not actually listened to this one - we gave it as gift and have not heard from them either. But we started with Beethoven's Wig 3 which is OUTSTANDING! My kids love it, as do all the "kid" passengers who have ever heard it. We also have #2, which initially didn't seem as good as #3, but with more listening, we are enjoying it more too. #3 was a winner from the very first song. The lyrics are hilarious and the music is beautiful - and my kids love the instrumental pieces as much as the sing-along versions.  Written on July 13, 2006 Summary: Crap/Kitch SAVE YOUR CHILDREN FROM THIS! This is so much worse than silly phrases to remember a symphony and the composer. The singing is horrendous, and so much vibrato, that anyone who thinks it is an example of good musicianship will never learn that there is some good music out there - 'cause it ain't HERE! You want your kids to love classical music? Then play the real thing for them, they can sing along without words that belittle the glorious effort and achievement of the artists. You want silly? Get Tom Lehrer, and you can study up for science class, without becoming a drooling inmate. He even does a great job clarifying musical styles with Clementine! Barney has already ruined "This Old Man" and hundreds of fine folksongs, why not pull down the rest of the Acropolis with noisy talk-overs a la Science Fiction Theatre 2000. Then, there'll be nothing left but angry obscenities to rap along with. Don't even read the words - get a comic book for better command of the language, even a goofy Japanese/fake English one. Yeah, I'm over thirteen. Maybe that's why I can tell it's designed to destroy any possible Mozart effect. Written on July 3, 2006 Summary: You need not be young to have fun Growing up,my two best friends' fathers played the viola in the CSO. I was constantly exposed to classical music and enjoyed many summers on the lawns of Ravinia listening to CSO rehearsals. That music made a beautiful and lasting contribution to my life. I passed my love of music on to my children, with inconsistent results. However, in a world where interest in classical music has ebbed, it was my hope that my grandchildren would have some appreciation. I purchased all three of the Beethoven's Wig CD's for them (and me). I also gave one to my remaining childhood friend, now 66, whose father played in the symphony. She loved it. My daughter listened to the CD in the car for the first time while driving carpool with her children. she called me from her car, laughing. "What a great" CD she said. "I am so happy you bought it for Ozzie." Thank you for your cleverness and far sightedness, Richad Perlmutter. |
