Professional Review:
Pearl Jam lowered its profile after becoming a worldwide musical phenomenon in the early '90s, pulling back from the touring, radio, and press fronts. And this diverse 13-song outing, lacking another "Alive" or "Better Man," isn't the album to thrust Pearl Jam back into the limelight. Binaural kicks out the jams with a grandiosity worthy of the Who, as Pearl Jam roars through the loose, raucous two-minute-plus opener "Breakerfall" and into another brief rave-up, "God's Dice." Quickly, though, the loud MC5-style guitar outpourings that begin PJ's seventh album (and first to feature former Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron) morph into the edgy, taut "Evacuation" and the midtempo "Light Years." The spare, mournful "Nothing as It Seems" (with lyrics and music by bassist Jeff Ament), "Thin Air," and the lilting "Parting Ways" all reflect romantic introspection. Eddie Vedder's poignant ukulele-accompanied "Soon Forget" is an affecting aside, and the rollicking "Insignificance" and Middle Eastern-tinged "Of the Girl" are all noteworthy. That's a strong lineup, but Binaural nevertheless falls short of the heights this talented group scaled in the past. --Katherine Turman

   Summary: Interstellar Overdrive!
While it's not the best Pearl Jam album, this is my personal favorite. A lot of this will sound biased, but believe me, it ain't. This is in my opinion, Pearl Jam at their most focused and determined. After the uneven flow of No Code and the exhausting Yield, this is Vedder and co. with new drummer Matt Cameron setting out to make the album they're way, not the radio-friendly way, and the results are fascinating.

At the onset of Binaural, Eddie supposedly had writer's block, and as a result, there was more chipping in from the entire band. Deciding to go with a new producer (Tchad Blake) and a new two-speaker sound, Pearl Jam deliver their most collaborative and serious effort yet. The result is the spaciest of their albums, perfectly encapsulated in the binary star on the cover, and the artwork found inside. People either love it or hate it, me being the former.

The music is wide-ranging. Mainly between the two polar-opposites of hard-hitting punk (Breakerfall, God's Dice, Evacuation) and mid-tempo broodings (Light Years, Nothing As It Seems, Thin Air, Of The Girl). Vedder gets political and complex in Insignificance and Grievance. Stone gets bluesy on Rival. And the band delivers two of their very best songs in their catalogue with Sleight Of Hand and the epic Parting Ways. In the strangest and most haunting devlopment, Vedder picks up Yukulele for Soon Forget. To explain these songs would take hours, there is so much to learn from the album with each repeated listen, there is no way to properly sum any of these songs up in ten words or less. Thanks to the spacy production, and cryptic lyrics, there is always some detail, be it big or small, lurking just out of reach.

I've listened to this album many times, and I still can't tell you what it's all about, but it seems to be about finding purpose and reason for why we are where we are in a universe of infinitie proportions and possibilities. The best time to listen to this album would be on a starry night when you're lying on your back looking up at the stars, reflecting on whatever you may, and possibly questioning things for which you have no answer, just a theory.

If you just heard Ten or Vs. and you're looking for a hard hitting album, you'll likely be disappointed with this one. But if you're looking for deep meaning and great food for thought, this is your album. Put on your earphones, sit back, and gaze upon the infinite.

Summary: mature, atmosphereic, and damn good
How fans can say that this is PJ's weakest effort is beyond me. This album is mature, very developed and atmosphereic. There isnt one song on this album that i wasnt thouroughly pleased with. A top notch preformance the whole way through.

Summary: year 2000 hard rock classic
pearl jam have been unfarely, critised, after the first three albums, their second album bein' my favorite, but this is close second place with "ten" not just because eddie vedder hasn't lost his quality voice it's because the songs and musicanship is f****** amazing and vedder's lyrics are as thought provoking as anything on "ten" as people have commented in the past vedder is an under-rated lyricist due to the fact that..he gets shunted for the like's of not makin' his stories he tells obivous.
well i for one like a bit of murky water in my music and this album has all the qualities that make pearl jam and monumental band that stood the ground of grunge and exspanded with different musical genre's over the years, and not stuck to the DNA structure that made grunge so popular, and that was killed out by that dreadful britpop in 1994.

p.s one last comment "nothin' as it seems" and "of the girl"
are two of the best songs ever PEARL JAM RULE

Summary: Light Years and many more great songs
I think that Light Years has to be the most underrated Pearl Jam song by far. I am shocked by it's pure beauty every time I hear it, both in the music and the words. Insignificance, Grievance, and Nothing as it Seeems are also great songs.
