Professional Review:
Joni Mitchell would go on from this '71 recording to make more popular, more ambitious, and more challenging albums, but she's never made a better one. Working with minimal accompaniment (Stephen Stills and James Taylor are two of the four sidemen), the Canadian thrush summoned an involving song cycle of romance found and lost. Though Blue is an uncommonly intimate representation, it's also astonishingly open and gracious. Songs such as "All I Want," "Carey," "California," and "A Case of You" work equally well as poetry and pop music. --Steve Stolder

   Summary: An Exquisite Sadness
Some ethereal force prompted your Metamorpho to review this c.d. This has been part of my considerable archive for some time. Yet, somehow it came to mind and I don't have any clue why. Perhaps it may be the need to frequent some dark cafe and meet Joni with her fishnet stockings and talk of life, and loves, and drink some fine wine. I think she can teach me alot, as well as me teaching her about life. And, in large part, this c.d. is about life, but not only the outward life we all experience, but the life within the soul.
I will tell you all, right from the beginning, that I deem this one of the highest recordings of all time to reflect by. She is a dreamer, a person who wants to so desperately to break free, who is fully aware of the shallow games she plays (and others play) and wants nothing more than true love to flourish. However, she is aware that she is her own saboteur and fears winding up lonely and loveless. When it comes to the enigma of the human condition, Joni is without equal on this c.d. There is a real sadness underneath these gems, but that is not to say that Joni can't fix it. It's just that she is helpless and prone to her own personal quirks, which she knows brings her great pain. But still, the songs ring true and this whole outing is an amazing confessional therapy for all to see.
First off, Joni's warbling and hitting those high notes might be off-putting to some. To me, they are essential because they emphasis the emotion she is feeling. And this is, for me, a blessing.
This album is a lesson in economy. It is Joni on acoustic guitar; it is Joni on piano. And, when there is background accompaniement, it is sparse and not anywhere near overdone. I think that this only adds to the charm of the album.
"All I Want" is an amazing track. It is a yearning in love. However, she knows that being so vulnerable opens her up to hurt- so she hurts back. Overall, alot is conveyed with the line, "Oh the jealousy, the greed is the unraveling, it's the unraveling, and it undoes all the joy that could be". Such great wisdom. But, most of us have a hard time coming to grips with this in our lives. Joni included.
"My Old Man" is a vision of hers. Real or not? But one who can surely keep away her lonesome blues. Sometimes it's hard to qualify her content, With Joni, it's an aspiration to someplace higher and built on edifices of wishes and dreams. This is what is so amazing about her. "Little Green" is about bringing up a child within the distance of a broken relationship. Beautiful acoustic conveying the beauty of the child; but with all the nice things, "sometimes there'll be sorrow". So very melancholy. Wonderful juxtaposition of mood.
In "Carey" she's leaving her lover for home. Yet, it's a joyous ode because she's living in the moment and wants to celebrate the now. Even with the underlying sadness-she toasts to a mean ol' Daddy who is out of sight. In the long run-she must move on. But, she is not sure where she's running to.
"Blue" is amazing and so wistful and tender with loss. Songs are like tatoos. Indelible- and undeniable- and Joni has the sadness of blue stamped on her soul. Listen to the piano on this. So expertly tied to the theme. As far as creating a mood with music- there aren't many that can do what Joni does.
"California" is a lilting tune to having the blues and wanting to return home. However, this time she leaves a man to return to California, that she personifies to a love. "Will you take me as I am?", a safe question to ask her home but, maybe, not of a lover.
"This Flight Tonight" is jaunty but unsure tune insofar as Joni's emotions are concerned. She is torn between leaving a love for supposed safety- but he's got the lovin' she likes alright. However doubt enters and there is much in the line "sometimes i think love is just mythical". Is real love just a dream we all fool ourselves to be real? Joni asks this question here-and, believe me, we have to exhume Aristotle to try and resolve this issue. And that's not to say we will, or won't succeed. But, as Joni knows- we have to try.
Next up is one of the most wonderous sweet/sad songs I have ever heard in my life. It is "River" and, to my mind, it hits deep. One of the saddest and most melancholy Christmastime tunes ever written. It is regret- it is a deep yearning to escape the pain. It is a beautiful pain. How she can convey all this with one tune is testimony to her incredible artistry. If you ever lost someone very special-listen at your peril.
"A Case of You" is about how blood and wine get mingled into an addicted love. And, yet, it is bitter and sweet. She is frightened by the devil, and drawn to those that ain't afraid. Her vulnerability has mingled with his strength, thus, she becomes strong enough to deal with the pain of seperation. An amazing tune.
By the last tune "The Last Time I Saw Richard", with sparse piano, Joni has finally become empowered to deal with a cynic more cynical than she is. Richard was a dreamer, but he totally lost his faith. He puts on songs that are dreaming but, ultimately, settles for, instead of a candle in some small cafe, a house with all the lights on and a t.v. That's how Richard deals with the darkness. For Joni, she's gonna blow the candle out and wait for redemption. Only a phase- so she hopes.
In conclusion- there is alot here. And I probably only scratched the suface on all the nuances and revelations revealed within this c.d.
This c.d is a testimony to sweet sadness- perhaps the best one I've ever heard. Done so economically but with such a powerful punch. Music doesn't have to have grinding guitars to make an impact. Sometimes, the softness in music is the most pertinent.
In any all-around music collection- this one is essential.

Now that I'm over this-back to my inane ways! - your Metamorpho

Summary: Blue's clues to a life
Mellow, introspective, and sparsely orchestrated, Blue features a few B-list tunes (Carey, This Flight Tonight, River) but the rest of the material doesn't disappoint. Joni's voice is pure and angelic throughout, although when she soars into the high notes it sometimes seems forced. Alanis Morissette wouldn't have bothered with her career if she'd given Blue a good listen - Joni was trumping her 25 years earlier.

   Summary: Beautiful album...mixed memories
I remember when this album came out. I lived in a house with a group of friends. One guy was going through a breakup with his girlfriend and used to lock himself in his room and listen to "river" over, and over, and over again. Needless to say, it drove everyone nuts. However, this remains my favorite Joni Mitchell album. This flight tonight (later rocked up by nazareth) and "Case of you"...the whole album's great!! The title "blue" is very apt. This is, in many ways Joni Mitchell's equivalent of Clapton's Derek and the Dominoes. On this album Joni Mitchell achieves art of a true "blues" caliber while remaining within her own unique style. Not a small achievement!! She will move on to explore other styles, including Jazz. However, to me, this remains her greatest moment. Also, forget all those rumors about her not being able to "tune her guitar". Along with Richie Havens, Joni Mitchell was one of the most original and creative rhythm players of her generation. This album is essential listening for fans of any style of music.

Summary: The Soundtrack of My Life
As a high schooler, I was introduced to Joni Mitchell 'Songs to a Seagull' by a classmate (who is now CFO of Microsoft!). I was entranced by the beauty of 'Chelsea Morning' and pleased to be an insider to the source of 'Both Sides Now' and 'Circle Game'. It was the beginning of a love affair that has spanned decades.

I call 'Blue' my life soundtrack because circumstances placed me in a position in my life where the relevance of Ms. Mitchell's lyrics to my life was uncanny, to say the least.

At 24 years of age, I found myself in Ireland over the holidays. I had left my Chicago home to start a new life there, and ran into disillusionment and homesickness. Listening to 'River' - "it don't snow here, it stays pretty green, I'm gonna make a lot of money and I'm gonna quit this crazy scene. Oh, I wish I had a river, that I could skate away on" I found myself in that exact situation. Weirdly prophetic? Auto-suggestion?

No, just a perceptive artist who took her own experiences and feelings and wove them into a tapestry of blue. Truly, this is one of the masterpieces of the 20th Century.
