Professional Review:
Think of this long awaited studio album as if it were the first Pretenders record: musical turf that's defined by attitude, lyrical and melodic mastery, and the unexpected...and Chrissie Hynde's voice as you've always known it. "Break Up The Concrete" is an authentic slice of rock Americana, ranging from blistering punk to the most delicate storytelling as told by the queen of rock royalty herself.

   Summary: Not a real "return to form"
"Boots of Chinese Plastic" rocks but the songwriting in general is disappointing here, as it's been since album #4. Contrary to the review below, stuff like this is NOT why the Pretenders are in the Hall of Fame or considered an all-time great band.

For that, get the first three albums (Pretenders, Pretenders II, Learning To Crawl), or in a pinch skip the second.

   Summary: Whack it, thwack it, line back it!
The Pretenders (or should I say Chrissie Hynde) are back for their ninth studio album "Break Up The Concrete". A more blues based album than the dancehall influence "Loose Screw".

Is this the best Pretenders album? No. Are there some good songs surrounded by average songs? Yes. Does this mean you should not buy "Break Up The Concrete" if you are a die hard Pretenders fan? No. But, you might want to sample the songs and download just the ones that appeal to you. I bought the cd (yes, cd), and overall I like it. I don't find it to be as good as their early work, but it is still enjoyable, just not as memorable.

However, there are a few tracks that really stood out to me such as the lead single "Boots Of Chinese Plastic", "The Nothing Maker", "Love's A Mystery" and the title track. The rest of the songs were pleasant, if not altogether pedestrian, middle of the road, rock. I keep waiting for Chrissie to hit us with one last super-album. I think she still has it in her, but we might have to wait another four or five years. I think it would be interesting to see her work with Rick Rubin. I think is style of production and Hynde's style would mesh well together.

Three and a half stars for being just above average for The Pretenders. Obviously, "The Pretenders" and "II" would be five stars and maybe "Packed!" would be three stars. I don't think Hynde has ever made less than a three star album.

   Summary: Not Even Almost Perfect
I have always been a big fan of the Pretenders and still regard most of their catalog as pop rock that helped to break some barriers in the rock genres, but Break Up the Concrete does not measure up to expectations. First, the album is much too short, finishing at 36 minutes, but the tracks themselves don't make up for the cheated running time. Chrissy Hyde does not rock enough on this record, in fact, she barely shows her teeth at all as these tunes go too much the way of a blues-based format. It's not even so much that the songs are terrible, but they just won't grab you, most of them lacking any pulse and not one song that really stands out as the one that can hold the entire collection together. The album may be titled Break Up The Concrete, but in terms of musical style and creativity, The Pretenders have done nothing to show their influence or to shake the pulse of modern music.

   Summary: This is a good album from the Pretenders
This is an excellent new album from the Pretenders. Chrissie still delivers superb vocals, even though her band is made of relatively new musicians. The best song on this album is "Love's a Mystery". Chrissie's vocals are great on this track. I love the pedal steel guitar playing by Eric Heywood on this tune. Heywood also performs on the track "The Nothing Maker". This is a pretty song that questions an individual's value to society. I also like the upbeat tracks "Boots Of Chinese Plastic" and "Don't Cut Your Hair". These songs really get me moving. I miss Martin Chambers on drums, but Jim Keltner does a good job replacing him here. Another highlight is the track "You Didn't Have To". This is a beautiful song featuring James Walbourne on the accordian. The Last Ride is an excellent song about friendship. I really like this song. "One Thing Never Changed" is a very touching song. I like the tenderness in Chrissie's voice here. This is a very entertaining album.

   Summary: Nice collection
I'm not a musician or song writer and usually I like rock. I recently purchased the CD and listened to it daily:
1. Boots of Chinese Plastic, good, buy;
2. The Nothing Maker, okay, good vocals;
3. Don't Lose Faith In Me, blues, okay;
4. Don't Cut Your Hair, jazzy, buy;
5. Loves a Mystery, good, buy;
6. The Last Ride, good, buy;
7. Almost Perfect, beatnik, okay, good lyrics, (Ohio!);
8. You Don't Have To, good, buy;
9. Rosalee, blues, okay;
10. Break Up The Concrete, jazzy, good beat; and
11. One Thing Never Changed, blues.
Thanks to Chrissie Hynde and all the people that created the CD. Overall I liked the CD because of the mix of sounds and lyrics. I will purchase the next Pretenders CD. There were probably no songs that I would rate on the level of "Back on the Chain Gang".
