Summary: What the Beach Boys should have been
Although this review is nominally about the DVD, I can't really separate it from the CD "Brian Wilson presents SMiLE". Many of us have heard the rumors over the years. And personally, I thought Pet Sounds has been grossly overrated. But SMiLE has made me a staunch believer in the "Brian Wilson is a genious" theory of 60's US music.

I don't believe many younger people (under 25ish) will find this music very enticing, but for those of us old enough to have been exposed to a very wide variety, SMiLE is pure heaven. Before actually hearing it, many will think it is merely the delayed midlife crisis of Brian Wilson, but I am here to tell you that we should all get on our hands and knees and thank the Almighty that Brian Wilson survived long enough to get to the point where he was willing and able to complete this music.

As for the DVD, sure, buy it if you want to see a live performance of SMiLE, or you want to see the documentary (a sort of a "making of" thing) which is also quite good. But if you don't get yourself a copy of the CD, you're simply not human. It is sublime where Pet Sounds was actually merely a collection of self-indulgent, though seminal, "poor me, poor me" crap later to become so important to the grunge and even rap repertoire.

SMiLE is easily the best CD of "popular" music that I own. It is even apparent that Paul McCartney could have nicked "She's Leaving Home" from Brain Wilson's "Wonderful". Another point of more than passing "similarity" is the barnyard sounds on Sgt Pepper at one point. Sgt Pepper is now put into perspective as The Beatles answer not to Pet Sounds, but to what Paul heard when he visited the SMiLE recording sessions.

   Summary: Really Makes Me SMiLE!!!
I read in a review that this was the best band in the world. Yeah right. But after seeing this DVD presentation, I BELIEVE IT! These guys (the Wondermints, the Brian Wilson Band) are awesome, and I have to agree with Brian Wilson when he says they sound better than the Beach Boys! Their playing and singing is so fresh and energetic. They really show how much fun they are having with this music! It is great to see the SMiLE album complete after so many years, and even better to see the live performance. I even bought tickets for the Denver show on August 26 because of this DVD. It's so much great entertainment for under $20, even if it were just the SMiLE performance without all of the extra features.

   Summary: Genius
Definitely one of the musical events of our lifetime. SMiLE was one of my
favorite CDs of last year. I got to see Brian Wilson live at Carnegie Hall in
October 2004. It was amazing. Now we have a performance of the full concert. It
is shot wonderfully and captures a great moment in music. This DVD also
includes the Beautiful Dreamer documentary. It is all about the creation and making
of SMiLE. It is a must see. The genius of Brian Wilson is never over-estimated.
My favorite parts are "Heroes and Villains" and "Wonderful." For me there
is no song that is better than "Wonderful." All the extra material is really
great. The concert reactions are really genuine. People came from all over the
world to see him perform this because it was such a mystery. We have the CD
and DVD and now more people can see how great this music is.

   Summary: Utter Brilliance
This DVD is a must buy for anyone that loves music. Not only does this work capture the brilliance of Brian Wilson in all music-making dimensions, and especially the joy that is Smile, but with surprising honesty and realism, it captures in documentary fashion his voyage to redemption...the purging of deeply-seated demons...

Watch Disk 1 first, and then the afterwards, the concert reactions in Extras. Then watch Disk 2.

If you had an out-of-body experience watching the movie Ray, you'll have a similarly emotional and perhaps more rewarding experience with this DVD.

Smile, unlike Ray, has a very happy and totally fulfilling ending.

Better than I thought, I hope the show I go to is this good.
