Summary: 3 Large Volumes, One Big Story, Three Masterpieces in One
Without doubt or second thought, I have spent a week thinking of the one book which captivated my interest with such force and curiousity, and provided such tremedous reading pleasure as Tales of the Otori, all three books. Brothers Karamazov? War and Peace? No! I have averaged reading 100 to 200 books per year, for 39 years now. I cannot think of any book or series of books which have captured my imagination and fancy so much and provided me with so much entertainment, including sensations of integrating my self within the storyline, and emotions and feelings of all possible feelings and emotions known to man. They are all contained within this gifted story, of which we as readers are blessed with for our reading pleasure, amongst other reasons. This book is by far the greatest champion of a book I have ever read, of any type of book. Like I said I have read many and all types of books. None have come so close to captivate me as this book. Sure I have read hundreds of books I have deemed great, Neil Gaiman's American God's was a great read. However nothing can come close to this thoroughbred of a book, which has distanced itself halfway around the track ahead of all other contenders. A must for any serious reader of any type or style. I was so enthused with reading this book, I also bought the complete series on CDs, and listened to them several times, and still find myself occassionally listening to them. I found listening to the books on CD to be much more entertaining than reading the books. Not to mention I used to never be able to tolerate any kind of audio books before this story, now I am hooked on audio books, thanks to Legends of the Otori. The narration is soothing, almost hypnotic, and brilliantly read. This makes listening a real pleasure and cuts down on the time it takes to read the books. Plus the narrators add that extra touch of sensation, one cannot get out of reading rather than listening too audio books. Make this a number one on your list. If you are in the market not only to reward yourself with a gift you will always be thankful for, this makes a great gift for others, of which they will never forget you, for this is the greatest book ever written by man! I give this book Ten Stars out of Five available stars.

Summary: A LYRICAL, PERSUASIVE VOICE PERFORMANCE
Kevin Gray received plaudits for his readings of " Grass For His Pillow" and "Across The Nightingale Floor," Books One and Two in the Tales of the Otori Series. He delivers another blockbuster performance with the final book in the trilogy, "Brilliance of the Moon." His performing voice is soft yet strong, persuasive, almost lyrical. Aika Nakasone more than holds her own with the sable voiced Gray.

Now safely wed hero Otori Takeo and Shirikawa Kaeda take little time to honeymoon but he sets off to secure what he considers their birthrights. They remember the holy woman's prophecy: "Your lands will stretch from sea to sea, but peace comes at the price of bloodshed. Five battles will buy you peace, four to win and one to lose....."

However, their enemies are formidable as their marriage has infuriated warlord Arai Daiichi and Lord Fujiwara. He is able to emerge victorious in two battles but, meanwhile, he learns that his bride has been kidnaped and turned over to the vengeful Fujiwara.

Obstacles mount and actions escalates, holding listeners in thrall as this mystical tale of medieval Japan unfolds.

"Brilliance of the Moon" is first-rate entertainment leaving listeners hoping for just one more adventure.

Summary: Brilliance of the Moon - A brilliant conclusion!
Brillance of the Moon concludes the trilogy, Tales of the Otori, written by Lian Hearn. Each book is a wonderful tale of ancient Japan, there are complex characters and riveting battle sequences.
The first book (Across the Nightingale Floor) is the most engaging of the three but the other two are just as exciting to read. Don't be discouraged by other reviewers, these books are wonderful to read with characters that you miss once you've finished each book.
When I saw that this title had arrived, I couldn't wait to see where Takeo and Kaede's lives were going. Admitedly there are weaknesses to this book, it wasn't the strongest of the three but it is still worth the read!
Try these books and please read all three! You will be happy you did.

   Summary: BRILLIANCE OF THE MOON
An amazing tale of a place just beyond the reach of an outside world, the third book of the tales of the Otori once again transports the reader into a fanciful medieval Japan.
The tale follows newly weds Otori Takeo and Shirakawa Kaede and their struggle to claim their rightful domains. With much determination, the couple set out to fulfil the holy woman's prophecy, `Your lands will stretch from sea to sea, but peace comes at the price of bloodshed. Five battles will buy you peace, four to win and one to lose...'
They prepare for war, but just when victory seems certain, Hearn characteristically uproots her characters with unseen treachery and the two lovers are once again separated. Takeo must summon courage from his conflicted heritage to he fulfil his destiny.
The third volume of the Tales Of The Otori is a thrilling novel. It appeals to all audiences because of the many themes in the plot; Brilliance Of The Moon is a unique blend of romance, action, adventure and fantasy.

The third novel in the series takes us deeper into the complexities of the loyalties that bind the novel's characters at birth - the fates from which they cannot escape - Brilliance of the Moon goes beyond its transcendent storytelling in demonstrating how we are shaped by forces outside of our control and yet must forge our own destinies all the same.
The beauty and strangeness of this gripping tale make Lian Hearn's Brilliance Of The Moon, a must read.

Summary: What happened? Bad Editing, Rush To Print?
I really enjoyed the first two books of this series.

So what happened here?! Imagine chopping out the first 75 pages and then condensing the last 75 pages down to 5 or so, and then going to press. Voila!

This is just inexplainable. As a reader, I felt cheated.

I can no longer recommend this author, Gillian Rubinstein.
