Professional Review:
The Youngian reaction principle--which dictates that our hero follow commercial monsters (After the Goldrush/Harvest, Rust Never Sleeps) with willfully difficult busts (Time Fades Away, Hawks & Doves)--finally kicks into effect after a long string of straightahead bestsellers. The man's unpredictability has been a major reason he's remained vital for nigh on 30 years, so it's good to see he's still cranky enough to serve up these raw, sloppy, and, for hardcore fans, invigorating jam sessions with his fave band. --Jeff Bateman

   Summary: Arrow Through You
After recording an album with Crazy Horse devotees, Pearl Jam, Neil Young brings back the real deal on Broken Arrow. The album isn't made up so much of songs as loose jams. This isn't a bad thing as that's what Crazy Horse does best, jam. There are a couple of instrumentals, notably "Loose Change", that show off the brilliant musicianship of the group. Amid all the guitars, is one of Mr. Young's best acoustic numbers of the 90's, "Music Arcade". One complaint of Broken Arrow is that the vocals are low down in the mix and makes for a difficult listen in spots.

Summary: Good god what's wrong with these people?
i have loved this album since the first time i put it on my turntable...every song sounded so fresh and new to me then, it was like the first time i heard "sleeps with angels." i don't understand the people who say it's "halfhearted," "sloppy", and that only a few of the songs are worth listening to. i mean, what's wrong with "this town"? it's a cool song dammit!! this is one of the best from neil and the horse, and the summer tour of '96 that followed this album was extraordinary.

Summary: let it take you in
i think of broken arrow as more of a sonic experience than as a rock album. the envelope of guitar sound surrounds you and becomes almost ambient and hypnotic. the endless undulations of feedback are beautiful and emphasis is drawn away from the songwriting itself. which is not to say that the songwriting is not up to par, for it is. granted, it might not be on the level of some of neil's classics, but the melodies are very strong and memorable here. it may not be *the* defining crazy horse album, but it is certainly representative of their greatness.

   Summary: Half-baked but still tasty
I think many of us have similar feelings about this album. At first it totally underwhelms except for the fact that it sounds BIG. There is certainly no excuse for the lamentable snorefest that is "Baby What Do You Want Me To Do?", and I could live without "This Town" (is this track a joke?).

But then the better songs really start to grow on you and you end up playing them quite a lot: "Scattered", "Slip Away" and "Big Time" are all excellent performances - very mesmerising.

Shame that on this CD (and MIRRORBALL too), Young seems to have taken to burying his lead vocal in the mix.

   Summary: Great start--weak finish
How I wish Neil would have waited until he had three or four more great songs to add to this record. The first three tracks (clocking in at almost a half an hour) are great Young with Crazy Horse jams that would not be out of place next to "Like a Hurricane" and "Down By the River." Unfortunately, the rest of the album consists of throwaway tracks that probably took Neil about an hour to write. Fortunately, if you are a Neil Young fan those first three songs do make the album worth buying.
