| Ry Cooder's name has helped bring attention to this session, but it's the veteran Cuban son musicians who make this album really special. Reminiscent of Ellington in its scope and sense of hushed romanticism, Buena Vista Social Club is that rare meld of quietude and intensity; while the players sound laid-back, they're putting forth very alive music, a reminder that aging doesn't mean taking to bed. Barbarito Torres's laoud solo on "El Cuarto de Tula" is both more blinding and more tasteful than any guitar showcase on any recent rock album; a quote from "Stormy Weather" and some very distinct parallels to Hawaiian styles remind us of why it's called "world music." --Rickey Wright |

Written on November 6, 2006 Summary: destinctively colored cd excellent recording, very destictively colored music....I was impressed and am listening to it quite frequently. Written on August 26, 2006 Summary: Can I get a margarita with this??? I love the music. Great for dinner and it makes you want to go out dancing. So fun, creative and lively. I wish there were more out there like this one! I love "El Cuarto de Tulo" and "Candela". Even if you aren't a dancer, I dare you- try and sit still with this playing! It'll make you feel like you're on vacation. This is wonderful, even my 16 year old think its good, after I told im the backgound of the band, he was amazed. This is a must for music lovers. Written on August 9, 2006 Summary: Buena Vista at Buena Vista Just a classical "MUST" for starters in chillout-music. There are some very good tunes for a almost twenty-year old CD. I'll ask everyone interested in chillout to buy it, it's really hearsome. |
