   Summary: No subtitles
My husband loved the show. Laughed out loud. As I'm hearing impaired I couldn't really tell you much as who ever's making bucket loads of money from this DVD didn't have the courtesy and decency to add subtitles (in any language) as an option! Frankly I'm shocked that nowadays that is even legal... but there you go. They care little apart from making the sale for as small an investment as possible.

Summary: Just Forget About The Woman You Didn't Want To Marry
David Duchovny plays Hank, a fourty-something writer struggling with writer's block, whose new best friends, booze and sex, aren't helping his situation much. But at least they let him go to bed both blindingly drunk and with a girl he won't remember the next day.

Hank wrote three novels in New York and then moved to LA with his girlfriend and their daughter. In the vapidity of LA, Hank's ink stops flowing. His life deteriorates. His most famous novel, God Hates Us All, is made into a movie he despises. His girlfriend cheats on him with the more stable Bill, moves out, and starts making plans to get married. With his career in shambles and his family gone, Hank has a lot of empty holes in his life he is desperately trying to fill by engaging in casual sex with gorgeous women. The major fantasy for male viewers here being that even if you are a down on your luck, emotionally unavailable and drunk, very hot women are going to want to sleep with you all the time in LA. You won't be able to get through a day without being propositioned half a dozen times.

Californication is good and entertaining, but it does rely on a lot of cliches. Hank isn't all that likeable as a character washing down his self-pity with booze, but he is redeemed by his vulnerability and intelligence that manifests itself in hating the LA society he has been sucked into. Fifty-something male viewers are really going to enjoy watching Hank's kinky sexual exploits with very young (as young as 16) women and girls. Normally this would turn the female audience off, but what would be a major character flaw in most men is redeemed by the fact that Hank is still pining for his ex. He is the quintessential sensitive man scorned, and female audiences are going to forgive him for everything. And while Hank is engaging in "pointless pu**y", he performs brave acts of chivalry-beating down a party goer who calls his ex-girlfriend the "c" word, rescuing his daughter from a party about to get out of control, etc. Hank therefore becomes the sultry sex symbol, a flame smoldering for his ex, in desperate need of a rescue. Many many women are going to love him without exactly sitting down to figure out why. I like Hank, but I don't love him. Messes aren't my thing.

I've got to point out the blazing examples of plagiarism in this show because it's a cheap trick I resent. Obvious to everyone is the title-stolen from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The names of Hanks books are all titles of heavy metal albums. The B&D plot line developing between Evan Handler (Harry from Sex and the City - The Complete Series (Collector's Giftset) and his sensual assistant is a straight rip-off from the sexy quirky movie The Secretary starring Maggie Gyllenhaal and James Spader Secretary. Worst of all is Hank's character...an exact copy of Nick Carlton-William Hurt's character in the 1983 movie The Big Chill. The Big Chill. Showtime writers have copied every last detail of Nick down to the beat up Porsche, the womanizing and boozing to mask the pain-even going as far as taking the Rolling Stones song, "You Can't Always Get What You Want" to describe the characters state of mind. Every plot line, character, and theme in this show is stolen. It's disappointing to see Showtime writers sink to plagiarism to get a hit show, it's why Showtime will always be the "cheap version of HBO", and why I had to take off one star.

Just as "Sex and the City" fulfilled a lot of fantasies for women regarding relationships, living in NY and shopping!!!, Californication is going to fulfill a lot of sexual and relationship male fantasies for the fourty and fifty something male mid-life crisis set. Just like Carrie could be fabulously irresponsible and never end up with an STD while wearing a $100,000 Nina Ricci sweater, Hank doesn't have a job, has a pretty cool apartment on the beach, and plenty of women to sleep with. It's fun to watch, even when it's not all that deep.

Summary: One you watch the first 3 minutes... you're hooked!
I can't believe anyone would give this show anything lower than 4 stars. DD has some of the best one liners ever written and his character is one of the most refreshing on TV. Women want him and men want to be him. Please watch this show!!!

   Summary: Californication Fabulousfornia
Shipping from Amazon was lightening fast. DVD's arrived in great shape. Fun to watch again. It's nice to be able to backtrack and see pieces of this great program at my own pace. It's also nice to be able to once again listen and even jot down "Hanks" cutting quips, just so I can use them if the need ever arises. This show is very quirky and fun. It's definately for adults only but that's what I like about it. The writing is great and the stories are fabulous. David Duchovny is perfect for this part; as I understand it he's living it in real life.
Smell ya later........

Summary: Californication... A must see series
"Californication" is a new Showtime series that chronicles the life of struggling writer Hank Moody (David Duchovney) and his plight to get back together with his ex girlfriend Karen (Natascha McElhone), with which they have a daughter Becca (Madeleine Martin). If you think this sounds like another sap series that we seem to be overwhelmed with in this day in age, you are wrong. There is plenty of sex, drugs, alcohol and humor to dilute the underlying plot to attract viewers and keep you watching. It's not unreasonable to finish this entire series in one sitting.

Hank's problems begin when his best selling novel is turned into a mainstream Hollywood hit movie, which he feels ruined his work. Ever since he moved to L.A. from The Big Apple he comes down with a severe case of writers block. He takes a job as a blogger but hates the idea of blogging instead of creating a meaningful piece of literature. His hate for this blog is amplified once he finds out that his new boss is Bill (Damien Young), the man that Karen left him for. To make matters worse, Hank unknowingly has sex with Bill's 16-year-old daughter Mia (Madeline Zima), which ultimately becomes the inspiration for his newest novel, which is then used as blackmail against Hank after Mia steals the book and tries to get it published under her name. Throughout the series we see that Hank is still very much in love with Karen, even with his many interesting sexual escapades, and we get a sense that she stills loves Hank as well. This sets up for a very interesting look into Hank's many problems as he searches for love and self-discovery throughout the episodes.

"Californication" is one of the most hilarious shows on TV this year. There are many funny situations that lighten Hank's goal of reuniting his family. The humor ranges from awkward situations to hilarious three way sex scenes with entertaining climaxes. I believe I laughed so hard that I tore a muscle in my stomach. You will laugh, as well as sympathize with Hank's many problems, the whole way through this series... It's a guarantee. If I can get my mother to like this show, you will too.
