Written on April 26, 2001 Summary: Why aint there no more like him? I was lucky enough to get this on vinyl in 71 or 72, when I picked up my 1st guitar. Still to this day I can listen to this on CD over and over again!Theres never been a blues guitarist like him before, or after. The guitar playing between Johnny and Floyd Ratford always seemed to compliment each other to an extreme. Truly amazing are the guitar solos being played at the same time , on top of each other, but without using harmony, yet blending and complimenting each others licks in 2 completely different styles, rather than trying to out do each other. The blues licks played on "Sweet Papa John" was and still is one of the hottest blues guitar examples of any age, and I still play licks from that song today. I know theres lots of inspirational bluesmen out there, SRV , Clapton,BB King,Freddie King,Buddy Guy...etc.. the list could go on forever.But that was truly the "hottest" blues playing that I have ever heard. If you find it ...BUY IT!! You'll treasure it forever!!!! Written on March 21, 2001 Summary: Still sounds good after all these years I read the reviews, as far as "music fan" goes, I never had the LP but the CD sure kicks, it's fantastic because I walked in a record store to buy "Still Alive and Well" but they had "Captured Live" along as a double CD. Giles, I too thought the CD "Captured Live" was too short but coupled with "Still Alive" I got a great deal. Now while "Still Alive" is great, I am truly happy that I found great live Johnny music, it really is all good, and suprisingly the quality from my set sounds great, this type of rock and blues is ageless, in twenty more years it will still sound great, fast and furious as only Johnny Winter can play. Written on February 28, 2001 Summary: Simply the best Blues/Rock Live album EVER!! Writing a review for this album is really easy. I've been enjoying this one for years and I still rate it as my ultimate fave. There's no way you can find a better bluesrock band than this one. Johnny gives all members the oportunity to prove themselves and those guys really deliver. I have only one negative remark on this album: It's way too short in running time. It should be over 2 hours!!! Written on August 20, 2000 Summary: A really underappreciated musician. This album must be THE ultimate bargain...Johnny Winter is as good as it gets, sort of Jimi Hendrix meets Eric Clapton. And this album is as good as HE gets. And his bandmates are of equal caliber (as Clapton's and Hendrix's were.) Good players don't overshadow each other; they help each other sound better. Folks today say, "Johnny Who?", while they listen to clone bands and prepackaged groups that neither write music nor play instruments. Winter deserves to be remembered as much as any great musician from the 60's and early 70's era. He deserves a biography on "Behind the Music" on VH-1. Pass the word around. He's the best-kept secret in music. Remember, this is a LIVE album, with flesh-and-blood musicians actually playing instruments, not computer-generated, synthesized sounds repeated every eight bars. This deserves 50 stars. Try it; you won't be disappointed. He has a lot of other good albums out, too, including a couple of other live ones.  Written on May 11, 2000 Summary: Great Live Blues-Rock This is one of the all-time great blues-rock albums. High-energy, scorching guitar from one of the best, in his prime. The frantic pace never lets up. |
