Professional Review:
Kicking off A&M's ambitious Cat Stevens reissue program is this 20-song introduction. The set surveys all of Stevens's stages, from the orchestrated late-1960s sides through his early-'70s peak to his more eclectic late-1970s experiments. Following the progression makes for an interesting endeavor as Stevens learns to harness his ambitious ideas with arrangements that don't obscure his rhapsodic messages. Few artists of his generation were more gifted when it came to plucking timeless melodies out of thin air, and his sumptuous voice was always able to movingly convey his bittersweet lyrics. As a career overview (including one previously unreleased cut) this set achieves its goal, hitting all of the chart successes along the way and basically defining his role as a sensitive '70s singer-songwriter, but some fans may opt for the classic early-'70s studio records, which find Stevens at his most consistently touching. --Marc Greilsamer

   Summary: A great collection
Such beautiful music compiled so well. These are those songs that were stuck in your head for years (if you used to listen to Cat). Just simple great tunes, words and singing.

   Summary: Perfect
If there really is no such thing as perfect, then "The Very Best Of Cat Stevens" is as close as you can get to a perfect compilation.

Cat Stevens was one of the most successful artists of the early 1970s' singer/songwriter movement. His mellow, acoustic based hit singles still remain classics today. And they're all here on this neatly packaged, digitally remastered, 20 song collection. Those hits include "The First Cut Is The Deepest", "Wild World", "Hard Headed Woman", "Morning Has Broken", "Moonshadow", "Peace Train", "Peace Train", "Sitting", "Oh Very Young", "Another Saturday Night" and "(Remember The Days Of The) Old School Yard". Also, many underrated gems including the previously unreleased "I've Got A Thing About Seeing My Grandson Grow Old". And the sound quality is excellent.

The oackaging, as I said, is beautiful. The liner notes make for a great read. An essential album for your record collection.

   Summary: Awesome!
What an awesome collection. Can't say anything else. Some songs I'd never heard before, and it's all incredible.

Summary: great compilation, didn't miss anything
if you are at all interested in Cat Stevens, you should definitely consider this collection. It puts all of the best work of anything he has done on one cd, it is a very well assembled best of collection without any ommissions that are noticeable. It leans heavily toward his Tea for the Tillerman album, which is considered his best work overall. He made some great music over the years, and though I sometimes find his holier-than-thou philosophy and weird fantasy bothersome, I enjoy the music and appreciate the outstanding contributions this makes to my cd collection. You should definitely get this if you want the most complete collection of Stevens on one cd.

Summary: Simply Amazing...One of the Greatest Compilations Ever Made
Cat Stevens - What can be said? This is the man responsible for solidifying my interest in theology and history. It was because of this man that I have studied theology, especially Islam, for nearly five years and with the spiritual, beautiful music here, it's very easy to see why.

This is, in effect, every one of the rocker's finest hits from "Wild World," to "Peace Train". Each song touches the heart and stirs emotions within the listener, some of the work even powerful enough to bring one to tears as it did me with songs like "Oh Very Young," and "Father and Son," both heartwarming, scerine tale of growing old as life passes us by. Other songs like the acoustic "The Wind," "Morning Has Broken," and my favorite, "Sitting," are all amazing, spiritual revelations, showing the true and pure essence of Cat Stevens and his love for life.

Stevens' political side also shines through here with songs like the aforementioned "Peace Train," and particularly, the lulluby-like "Where Do the Children Play?" The compilation also contains a few of rock's greatest love songs like the original renditions of "The First Cut Is the Deepest," and "Wild World". His fun, playful side is also pleasently presented with "Another Saturday Night," and the beautiful, reflective, happy "(Remember the Day of the) Old Schoolyard".

Every song is amazing; a poetic statement that is simply astounding. During his career, before his leaving the life of a rock star after his admirable conversion to Islam for pursuit of spirituality, Cat Stevens, now Yusuf Islam, was and still remains one of rock & roll's finest artists and this compilation proves exactly why he has reached and maintained his status: That of a legend.
