   Summary: Smokin'
Many reggae fans have long villified Island Records head honcho and, according to Lee Perry, vampire, Chris Blackwell for adding additional instrumentation to this album's original tapes in order to pander to mainstream Western tastes. The fact is, the Wailers themselves were intent on breaking reggae worldwide and reportedly approved of Blackwell's "enhancements". Whatever the case, the listener can be the judge with this collection.

Disc One features the original Jamaican versions of the songs that were to eventually comprise "Catch A Fire". These tracks are generally more raw and immediate than the official Island release. In some cases, there is little variation between the two. In others, the differences are quite notable. Many consider the originals to be the definitive versions. Also featured are two bonus tracks, including the beautiful "High Tide Or Low Tide" which was originally made available on the Marley boxed set.

Disc Two, of course, is the released album complete with Blackwell's sonic "tinkering". I honestly feel that each disc is crucial. The Jamaican tapes offer a rock solid foundation for the tasteful contributions of some ace studio musicians. They hardly turned "Catch A Fire" into a mainstream rock album. Rather, they added some rock flavor to what is very much an uncompromising reggae album. Take, for example, John "Rabbit" Bundrick's clavinet and Wayne Perkins' guitar parts during the intro of "Concrete Jungle". Rather than detracting from the original version, their parts contribute to the the song's overall intensity and sense of desperation. Perkins' guitar solo is simply incredible and, again, only adds to the song's dramatic flare. Elsewhere, Perkin's slide guitar parts (and especially his solo) on "Baby We've Got a Date" are unexpectedly effective while Bundrick's etherial synthesizer on "Stir It Up" elivates this tune to a higher plane.

Compare the two discs for yourself. Both are 100-percent enjoyable, in my opinion.

Summary: All Day and All Night you can listen to this set
When the Wailers were signed to island records in 1972, this marked the beginning of reggae to an international audience. The Wailers were already famous throughout the Carribbean, but worldwide they were nobody's. Catch a Fire changed all that. This was packaged as a rock album and the original album sleeve was actually a zippo lighter and when you opened the lighter the record would come out. This artwork is not original. The sound tapes were actually overdubbed with rock giutars and other instruments to make this album appeal to an American and English audience.
The first disc is all the original Jamaican takes which are better then the overdubbed ones released originally to the world in 1972. The original Mixes have such a feel to them, and you can really appreciate why this band was so big in the Carribbean. The Wailers first album has a feel unlike any other Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, or Bunny Wailer solo album. the three of them together were simply amazing and no vocal trio will ever equal how good this band was. With the Barrett brothers on drums and bass and a young Tyrone Downie on the keyobards, this band was well on the path to stardom, and Catch a Fire was the start. If you have a music collection, you need this Deluxe Edition in your collection.

Summary: The Phenomenal Breakthrough Reggae Album
Catch a Fire, by Bob Marley & the Wailers, was the first reggae album to show the genre as a serious form of music outside of Jamaica, on par with American and British Rock and Roll and R&B. Before this 1973 breakthrough, reggae was seen as something of a joke. Even though Jimmy Cliff's "The Harder They Come" set the stage, "Catch a Fire" clinched it. The album is a solid classic and a masterpiece with lead vocals not just from Marley, but bandmate Peter Tosh as well, on the tracks "400 Years" and "Stop That Train". The deluxe edition features both the original "Catch a Fire" album, released only in Jamaica in December of 1972 with its two bonus tracks as well as the original album released internationally to the public in May 1973, both with songs like "Stir It Up," and "No More Trouble," as well as the underrated classic "Baby We've Got a Date (Rock It Baby)", my favorite song on the album. Both are also astonishing and the difference in sound between the two is subtle, yet extremely visible, adding to the album's charm and legendary status. "Catch a Fire" will leave you begging for more.

   Summary: Stir It Up!
A startling debut effort from the Wailers! This mighty record introduced Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Bunny Livingston and the Barrett brothers to the world in 1973. The reggae revolution in Jamaica was making quite an impact in the UK when Island Records took an interest in the Wailers. They took the original Jamaican recording and added some additional instrumentation (with the Wailers approval of course) before releasing this album in the UK and America. This wonderful CD has both versions in their entirety! It's impossible to decide which version is better (though the Jamaican version has extra tracks) so it's really worth having both versions. The music itself is absolutely wonderful and timeless. Marley is both a spiritual and political hero for many people and this record reflects many of his political concerns ("Concrete Jungle") but also features tender and beautiful love songs ("Stir It Up") as well. Peter Tosh's remarkable contribution ("400 Years") proves there was more to the Wailers than just Bob Marley. Though not as critically acclaimed as later Bob Marley releases like "Exodus" this is still one of my absolute favorite records and I highly recommend it as a starting point for the novice reggae fan. This wonderful package also has the original artwork, which was later changed once Marley had achieved worldwide success and popularity. Simply astounding!

Summary: Best reggae album ever enough said
The reviewer above said it best. If you are a roots reggae fan you will find disc one to be your holy grail. It is the band's version, released in Jamaica, not the overproduced version released in America. There is a huge difference in every song, except the fantastic "midnight ravers" and two extra songs are included on the Jamaican version. If you have never heard disc one (Jamaican version) you have never heard Catch a Fire, that simple. With Peter arranging the harmonies, Bunny hitting the high notes and Bob's amazing songwriting this is the Wailer's true masterpiece. In the American version (original release) most of the harmonies are covered up with synthesizers or overdubbed with Bob doing backup vocals. This CD is musical kind bud and proves Jah is great. Enjoy Brothers and Sisters!!!!!!!!!!
