Professional Review:
Fueled by healthy public appetite for traditional melodies and quasi-ethnic roots, the crossover genre continues to flourish with this debut release from Ireland's Celtic Woman ensemble. The brainchild of Sharon Browne, Dave Kavanaugh (founders of Ireland's successful Celtic Collections label) and young Riverdance touring company musical director David Downes, CW's five young women musicians and vocalists offer up an ever pleasant, Eire-savvy fusion of folk, pop and classical influences. Avoiding the intrusive, club-beat/sex kitten window dressing of Bond, the ensemble tackles material that ranges from the expected (spare, lovely covers of "Danny Boy" and "Ave Maria") to more adventurous fare like "Nella Fantasia" (Ennio Morricone's vocal adaptation of his rapturous theme from The Mission) and Enya's "Orinoco Flow." Elsewhere, "The Butterfly" offers up fiddle-fueled take on their Riverdance parallels (which also get a workout on the live bonus tracks), if renditions of Downes' originals like "One World" and "Send Me a Song" and "Someday" from Disney's animated Hunchback of Notre Dame hew slavishly to the middle of the road -- which largely seems the album's easy-listening intention. --Jerry McCulley

   Summary: Great!
Good songs! Reminds me of Enya. The song on this CD called "Walking in the air" is also sung by the band Nightwish. If you like this song I recommend listening to the Nightwish version also. Google it or go to Youtube and you can find it there to listen to.

This is the best CD for relaxing and just enjoying! I love all the Celtic Women who sing on this and love watching them, too, on PBS.

   Summary: enchanted music
This has become my favorite CD. The women have the most clear, delightful voices when singing alone, but there is magic when they are blended in harmony. My 13 year old neice heard the CD in my car and fell in love with it as well. This copy was a Christmas present that was quickly put on her ipod.

Celtic Woman
This is one of the most magical music DVDs I've ever purchased. Four Irish singers with superb voices (one of whom accompanies herself on the harp), one pixielike lady violinist who dances around the stage whilst playing, two creative drummers who so obviously enjoy their 'work' and the musical director who put it all together make for a delightful hour and a half's entertainment. Interviews with the participants included.
Have also purchased their second DVD, Celtic Woman, A New Journey, set in Slane Castle. Extra includes how production was put together. Again, magical.

Summary: Dear God, Please Make it Stop!
I just had the misfortune of watching/listening to this version of "Celtic Women" on PBS. What do these vapid, lip synching, saccharin elevator Muzak-singing Stepford Wives have to do with Celtic anything? It's like the Mormon Tabernacle Choir & the Brady Bunch morphed with the Laurence Welk on St. Patrick's Day in Disney World. Very scary and artificial; having absolutely nothing to do with the spirit of good Celtic music that I love. Run away as fast as you can and find some real Celtic music elsewhere if you have a micron of good taste. You'll not find it here. Yikes!
