Professional Review:
Why settle for basic, built-in sound? Your music and movies deserve Xtreme Fidelity. Turn your MP3s into your own personal concert. Hear your movies in virtual surround sound over stereo speakers or headphones. Plus the Creative Xmod Module for PC and Mac is truly plug-and-play. You can use it right out of the box-no software installation needed.

Summary: Big sound from a little controller
Frustrated with the earphone jack on my laptop, I decided to give this a go. the Xmod delivers awesome sound, even on my 10 year old computer speakers. I'm getting a new computer and speakers next week and can't wait to use the Xmod with it.

   Summary: Good product
The Creative Labs Xmod is a fairly decent product. It has a slick cool design that is pleasant to the eyes. The purpose of the Xmod is to make a computer with bad sound slightly better using a hardware modification. In uses algorithms to enhance the sound that speakers produce, acting as a kind of external sound card.

The first thing to note is that it has only one port for sound. This means that if you have speakers with more than one plug, this device will not function with the speakers properly. This device, in my opinion, was primarily designed for laptops, so that the person has improved sound on their limited system. This device is a great device for individuals that buy a computer at dell or gateway, and have no intention on updating from the cheap speakers it came with, yet suddenly find themselves wanting a volume dial or slightly crisper sound. Mind you, there are easier ways to meet these criteria. For $50 you can buy better speakers with a dial or a keyboard with one built in. This is also a good idea for someone with a laptop that want a small boost to their at home dock speakers.

The choice is up to you, if you can get this for cheap enough it might be worth it. There are a hundred other ways to get better sound from replacing the speakers to getting a cheaper internal sound card, but simply put, this is probably the easiest way to boost your sound if you are not computer savvy, requiring the least amount of plugging and messing with cables or installing of software(none involved).

Ps... You can make this portable if you wanted to for an mp3 player. All you would need is a usb power source. There are portable sources that plug into AA batteries for charging certain devices that would work, or of course you could plug it into a usb to wall converter(then your restricted to a wall outlet). Its bulky and probably not the greatest use of your time and energy, but it is possible.

   Summary: Does not work
I have owned the X-mod for well over a year and I can safely say that the x-mod does not work...or at least not the way the manufacturer intended it to.

The idea behind the x-mod was the digitally fill in spaces where it thought there was missing signal in compressed music, which..it kidna does i guess. The drawback is that it doesnt do it correctly especially in the treble region. The x-mod makes cymbals and hi-hats are way too sharp and bright on most songs and distorts most of the rest of the treble region as well. On some songs....its ok and there is some slight improvement, but overall, I find the x-mod to have been a bad investment as I hardly turn it on anymore.

   Summary: Worth the Money
My first impression of this product was disappointment, given how Creative Labs raises your expectation to deliver equal or better to studio quality sound, which is dishonest. At that moment I thought of jumping online and give it one star ratings, but I am glad I did not do it, because inaccurate ratings and comments is irresponsible for both, consumers and companies. Now, after a week of listening through Xmod, I have come to the conclusion that it may not be what the maker claims but it helps enhance the sound some and that improvement is what I can't live without from now on.(...)

For those thinking about using it in your car, you can buy a USB car charger to power Xmod. I have not tried but I am planning to buy one of those 6 in 1 car kit (USB charger, FM transmitter, ipod charger, holder....).

Also, you can increase or decrease the X-Fi crystalizer and the 3D sound effect by tapping (gently) on the 3 LED area (two taps activate X-Fi crystalizer to +/- the volume and the third tap will activate the 3D selection). The reason I mention this feature is that some, like myself, do not bother to read the manual and the design of the Xmod makes this feature not so obvious to the eye as it has no buttons.

As other reviewers said, if Creative Labs somehow can integrate this technology into their MP3 or digital players, it would gain great advantage over its competitors--and I suspect the next generation of Visions will feature this technology.
