 Written on January 20, 2008 Summary: X-Fi is Better than an Equilizer I bought an Zmod to use with my iPod at work. The 3D Surround and Crystalizer definitely do better than just an equalizer. I bought this sound card to use in my htpc at home that has only AC '97 onboard audio. Mobo udio was ok but sounded flat even when equalizer used. X-Fi is much cleaner sounding and louder than onboard audio. Also the 3D makes sound come out/forward more and Crystalizer helps bass better than eq with my home stereo my htpc is connected to. Digital out only work with 5.1 DVd's and is mini optical, But the quality from standard 2 channel audio is great!, even compared to my onboard digital out. Written on January 19, 2008 Summary: Great sound card, software mostly great The card rocks on Windows Vista. The new software really brings out sounds and makes GREAT use of the subwoofer for video games as well as for listening to music. Two gripes. First, the legacy Creative Media Source 5 Player does not work correctly with Windows Vista, it was designed for XP. There is a separate X-Fi volume control that does work with Vista. They should have one integrated panel that is fully functional with Vista. Second gripe, unless you buy an add-on, you can only burn/rip WMA format, you can't burn MP-3s or any other sound format to disk, portable player or to your computer. You are stuck with WMA unless you buy the $10 recording pack. Granted, not big bucks, but should be part of the package, not an add-on. Bottom line, great card, some software is great, other parts are either outdated or missing, worth the upgrade if you have Windows Vista. Written on January 18, 2008 Summary: Plug & Play I bought this card to free up my CPU from the integrated sound. I am running XP and all I needed to do was diable my integrated sound card in BIOS, plug in card and install drivers. The card is great and does exactly what the manufacturer states. Shipping from Amazon was awesome. It arrived in the promised time, even during the holiday rush period. I will definately be buying from Amazon again! Written on December 27, 2007 Summary: superb card for the money The card has some definite advantages for enjoying music, games and the like. The only disadvantage would be that it is not compatible with AC97 microphone and headphone jacks. Since I have a lowgrade videocard which i am planning to upgrade pretty soon I noticed there is a 15 percent increase in gaming as the card advertises. This is combined with an Athlon 3200+ 2 ghz processor Compared two games with this videocard Hellgate London and COD 4 there is definitely a performance increase in both games because Hellgate london would crash every other minute before the soundcard. In COD4 there is less system lockup and the bullets actually sound like real bullets. This is a rig with a 3 gigs of Ram and a 2 ghz processor so if you want to see some definite improvement running a outdated system buy a decent videocard for 150 and you will be gaming for awhile with the best sound for 80.00 dollars guaranteed. Written on December 13, 2007 Summary: Excellent Sound Quality, X-Fi Effects, Value I bought a Dell PC from Dell Singapore and requested X-Fi ExtremeGamer Sound Card for S$130 more. I heard about X-Fi and wanted to try it out. Indeed, it didn't disappoint at all. It runs smoothly under Windows Vista and it even can run concurrently with SRS Wow in Windows Media. It depends on your preference. I found most music become "alive" when X-Fi effects are on. A minority works better with SRS Wow on concurrently. Compared to other sound cards that offer 3D, high signal to noise ratio, enhancements, it has performance not worse than any other and yet cheaper. Excellent audio and value! |
