 Written on September 26, 2007 Summary: BETTER BURY YOUR FIRST TOY At long last, these incredible films are finally available. Grab this one fast as it will probably become a rarity joining "Salo", "Audition", "Liquid Sky", "Greaser's Palace", etc. Jodorowski hurls a giant gob of spit into the face of all organized religions, and if you can't take a profound level of unrelenting sacrelige and outright blasphemy, then skip this one. But if you appreciate true artistry in cinema, you will probably do no better. These are satires on the folly of the human condition: not parables for a modern age. The "meaning" of these films is elusive at best; juvenile and sophomoric at worst. Best to skip the meanings and focus on the images. AND WHAT IMAGES!! These are "moving paintings" with the same level of unfogettable tableaus as the "Qatsi" trilogy, Kubrick, or Guy Madden. Freakish, surreal, bizarre, and over the top artsy. Attention you gorehounds: these films are deliciously gory to the point of nausea and absolutely not for children or nervous persons. I am hopeful, but doubtful that Jodorowsky will film again. Who is going to invest in a movie that gets banned everywhere it goes? The "Sons of El Topo" project (Abelcain) is dead in the water. He allegedly has a project called "King-----something or other" that has a 100 foot tall Jesus head as the main prop. I'll believe it when I see it in the theaters and not until. Now when do we get the uncut "Santa Sangre" on DVD?? In the meanwhile, this fine collection is a must for any scholar of world cinema. Just don't watch them with your Mother! Written on September 7, 2007 Summary: el topo and holy mountain are masterpieces the rest is icing on the cake incredible set. I had the priviledge of seeing El Topo and The Holy Mountain on the big screen prior to the dvd release and it really changed how i look at film. its hard to describe the power these films have but if you let them wash over you they will truly move you. ive tried showing these to some of my friends and they get confused and grossed out so this is definately not for everyone. but if you area cinema enthusiast these could change your life. the dvds are very nice video quality considering how these films were unseen for many years in america. el cravate and fando y lis are intereting though not up to the standard of el topo and the holy mountain but very nice to have them here. the commentaries are great to listen too Alejandro is a very interesting man and i look forward to his next project. Written on July 24, 2007 Summary: absolutely great films,but dvd quality lacking I pre-ordered this whole set and have watched the short film,half of fando y liz,and all of el topo and the holy mountain:film-making at it's best! there are a few errors in editing,but that's small beans compared to everything else you get in visuals and thoughts.my only gripe is that with both el topo and the holy mountain the dvds had digital blips from manufacturing(the discs are 100% scratchless and I have a high-end regular dvd player)at a few points.with any normal movie this would be fine,but when a film is art such as these,the viewer is usually more discerning.still great,but I wish they would've done a better job at checking production. Written on July 21, 2007 Summary: great movies and great bonus Far out, revolutionary movies. Box set is generous in interresting bonus, including commentaries par Jodorowsky. A must for grownups who has a notion about the man. |
