| Griffin's follow-up to the acoustic, lyric-based material of Living with Ghosts shifts gears so dramatically, it hardly seems like the work of the same artist. In an electric wonderland of dense percussion tracks (played by Kenny Aronoff) and tricky guitar attacks (handled by producer Jay Joyce), Griffin reveals herself as a muscular rock & roll singer as well as an emotionally vulnerable balladeer. If the Ramones-loud title track seems to be trying too hard to rock and other cuts just sound busy, overwhelming the song with production--the chaotic rant of "Wiggley Fingers," for one--the anthemic pulse of "Tony" and the modern soul of "Christina" are gorgeous and convincing. They're the work of an imagination set free, if not fully grown. --Roy Kasten |

Summary: Disappointing Not what I thought it would be. This is not the real Patty Griffin. This may be her wild side, but not nearly as attractive as her reflective stuff. Summary: Patty Griffin Is A Miracle If I said Griffin was the best songwriter of the last decade, it would only be an injustice to her amazing voice, which swoops from raw, rugged rockers to achingly beautiful ballads at the drop of a hat. Listen to "Tony," a story of high-school guilt as seen over the shoulder of that big, fat slob in the front row (some of these shlumps went on to found software companies and become billionaires--not this one). Then try "Wiggly Fingers," which is as sexy as anything by Joan Osborne or Lucinda Williams. But finish off with the lullabies that wind the disk down, and you realize that this is not so much a departure from "Living With Ghosts" as a fulfillment of its promise. If this is not Griffin's best CD (the material may be a bit stronger on Ghosts or 2001 Kisses), it's certainly her most versatile. Summary: Perfection I think Patty may be most talented singer-songwriter making music today, certainly within the female folk-rock category which I love so much. Her lyrics, melodies, voice, guitar, and arrangements are all impeccable. I won't compare "Flaming Red" to her other albums because each is different, but each is brilliant. Flaming Red is (mostly) electric, rocking Patty, and it might be the best adult rock album of the 90s. In fact, I'll go out on that limb and state that it is! Patty takes you on a musical and emotional roller coaster on this album -- fast and loud, slow and quiet, happy, wild, achingly sad. Play it at high volume and give it your complete attention. Again and again. With each listen you'll discover a subtle musical gem you didn't notice before. Do yourself a favor and get this CD today. Then get everything else that Patty has ever done and does in the future. Summary: Time to Update This album would have 5 stars if the people who think Patty was going to do Living with Ghosts again wouldn't vote on this. But for that debut album, I wouldn't have known of her. I wouldn't have gone to the tri-bill that opened with this small woman, alone with a big guitar and flaming red hair. I saw her the next year in 1998 when this album came out. I bought it the week before the show and it just blew me away. Both the live show and this album. Sure I was expecting all acoustic too, but this was so, so much better. You truly have to hear Wiggley Fingers live. Man Oh Man. On the last tour I saw, she even re-did Flaming Red acoustic. Very powerful, even without all the guitars. It really hit me how dark that song is. With her last two albums, Patty moves back more to the middle-ground electric-acoustic that most fans love. But Flaming Red for me is the one. It is about her and a band and the one-time she had big-label production money and it shows. The results are fantastic. Everyone I play this for just falls for it. It's the #1 album in my rotation; it won't ever leave. I discussed FR above. One Big Love was her big radio airplay song that summer. Well crafted. It's a fun summer song. Tony is a haunting song about a homosexual who commits suicide. The production on this is stellar. Starts low and then hits in with the bass. The end of the song is a classic Patty moment where she is just singing filler along with the song. Those "original" PG fans should realize that the undertone of all of these songs are her classic arrangements and singing. I don't know what Change is about (abuse maybe) but it pulls through the song with her perfect, yet off-key alto. Her voice is one of the best I have ever heard, I just can't describe it accurately. Quirky with punch maybe? (Listen to One Big Love when she sings the words monkey, funky, hero and zero in straight succession and you'll see what I mean) Anyway, Change builds and reaches quite a crescendo, when she is singing the chorus in a slight yodel and then a high scream. Goodbye will just hit you in the gut. If it doesn't you have no soul. It's a recollection about someone who is gone (it reminds me of a suicide). Sounds very country, but you soon forget that. I can't listen to all the time, but it's very powerful. As before, her wonderful voice comes through far and high. You really have to hear this song live. You can almost hear her straining to hit the notes. The rest are all great songs too, but Blue Sky is the icing on the cake. From the mesmerizing guitar and bass drum at the beginning, it just keeps picking you up and taking you where Patty wants you to go. And that's the Blue Sky of course. "Higher and higher, good bye, good bye, good bye" When PG hits her falsetto chorus, you'll be matching her voice as well and in a trance, you'll just fly high and higher until the song fades out. This is quite possibly one of the best crafted songs of all time. It really gets me going when I need it. When I am melancholy, it makes me remember, but it gives me resolve too. Good music lovers will appreciate all of PG's albums. She is one of the best songwriters, lyrists, singers and acoustic guitar players out there. Proof? Her two last two albums have been up for Grammy awards. So don't listen to those who wanted a remake of her first album. This is my favorite and a lot of die hard fans will agree too. Good music takes us places. Sometimes to high places where we feel good. Sometimes to low places too when we are sad. A lot of what Patty writes is dark, but it comes from the heart. You relate to it because it places you, reminds you, and takes you. That's what good music does. Summary: Raw emotion, great songwriting, and a stellar voice Oh that voice! It's not like it's a competition, but Patty Griffin has passed Emmylou Harris for the most haunting voice in roots-based music. That haunting quality might come from double tracking in the studio, but still, it's all her voice and it is an amazing instrument. Then there are the songs, a few of which are small classics that linger, and most of which are memorable for their melodies. Add to this an adventurous production full of rewarding risks that pack an emotional punch and you have Patty Griffin's best CD. This CD was not popular because of its departure from the sweet folk sounds of her first album. Then A&M shelved her next CD. We'll never know what that one sounded like and that's a shame. Nowadays, Patty has developed a steady sound that while very, very good, just isn't as exciting as what she did on this CD. Very, very good Patty Griffin is better than 95% of the music that's out there. Excellent Patty Griffin, like that found on this album, is better than 98%. |
