Summary: A Good Product @ a Good Price
Our new Garmin 255w arrived just in time to try it on a trip from Cleveland, OH to Birmingham, AL. We attached it to the included window mount after cleaning the glass first. It proved to be secure and stable during the trip. The instruction booklet was minimal so we learned on the fly. The unit is very intuitive with the exception of changing states and counties. The solution is to select the COUNTRY first then you are given a screen choice of states and counties. Once programmed for our destination the unit performed very well announcing turns and freeway ramps in sufficient time to get into the correct lane. The voice is clear and loud enough to be heard over traffic noise, although it becomes a little annoying during congested traffic. Fortunately it can be muted. We now know why some refer to the voice as the Car Bitch!

The display provides posted legal speeds, current speed, distance and direction of next turn, and a zoomable map with a car shaped cursor showing your current location. The screen is touch sensitive and can be changed from 3D to Birdseye View simply by touching the image. With very few exceptions, the 255w provided reliable directions, particularly in cities we had never been to previously. When we made incorrect turns the unit recalculates a corrected route in a matter of seconds but may have you doing illegal U turns to get back on track.

Menu choices are abundant including many extras. You can select from millions of points of interest in an area. You can see the distance to your destination and even the altitude of your present location. There is also a "Where am I" feature that brings up addresses for the nearest fuel, hospitals, and police stations. As with many similar units the Garmin 255w can be connected to your computer via a USB port and down loaded with different maps, voices, pictures, icons, etc. We didn't need WiFi, live traffic conditions and MP3 capability in a GPS. We are very satisfied with this unit and feel comfortable recommending it.

   Summary: Great gps
I did alot of looking before buying the 255w and I am happy I did .
I have taken two trips since purchasing it and it did very well.
I like the text to speech and was pleased with the voice clarity.
I had read complaints of the voice clarity but it was not a problem.
I only had a minor discrepancy telling me to stay on i-80 and giving directions to take i-280.
This is my second Garmin the fisrt one is on my laptop computer and now the 255w I have to say that Garmin beats the rest for user friendly.
I would recommend Garmin to everyone.

   Summary: Excellent compact GPS
Before I get into the specifics of my review, let me offer one important piece of advice -- BUY A CARRYING CASE to protect the screen! These gadgets have sensitive touchscreen menus, and I think the fact that I didn't protect the screen on my last GPS is the reason it died after only 14 months. (I used to throw it into my glove compartment, where I'm sure it got jostled about.) My last GPS was a Garmin Streetpilot c340, and I loved it. But now that I have the nuvi 255W, I realize I was settling for second best. The nuvi is a wonder of modern technology. Like my previous Garmin, it has a very user-friendly setup. It literally works right out of the box as soon as you plug it in. But unlike my previous Garmin, the satellite acquisition is very fast, and recalculation when I deviate from the stated route is almost immediate. I love two of the features that my nuvi has -- the "where am I?" and the detour buttons. Previously, if I went somewhere that didn't have a recognizable address, I could not save that location in my favorites list. The "where am I?" button allows you to save your location and also tells you what is nearby. It's no doubt helpful when you get lost. The detour button is a big help when you're stuck in heavy traffic and don't know another route to take. You push "detour," and the nuvi automatically maps out another route for you. I have tested this feature several times, and it works quickly and beautifully. I do not have to mount this GPS on my dashboard, because it can receive a signal through my sunroof. I keep it on my gearshift console when I'm driving. The fact that this unit is so compact is a real plus. You can take it with you anywhere to use in a different car or to get you somewhere on foot ot just to prevent it from being stolen from your car. I highly recommend this GPS. One note of appreciation about Amazon.com: the first shipment was delayed and apparently lost. Amazon.com sent a replacement overnight. And their price on this unit was the best I could find. You think places like Walmart and Target discount these items? Guess again! They're charging full suggested retail.

Summary: Nuvi 255W vs Nuvi 260
After deciding on the 255W, I started to read all that I could about it. Everybody said the same thing, great unit, but poor voice in the TTS mode. I even had a friend who let me try his. It was like night and day compared to my Nuvi 260 that has TTS. So I called Garmin and ask if any fix was comming out to fix the voice. He told me yes. I bought the 255W and the voice was tinny and soft. But I could live with it. I ran the updater and there was an upgrade for the software and text for Jack TTS and Samantha TTS. After install, they did sound less tinny. Today, I checked the Web updater again and their was a second update for Jack TTS and Samantha TTS. Ran it, much better. Still, no impovement on the volume. In my car with my 260 the volume was set to 60% , with the 255W I use 70%. I have owned a Nuvi 200, a Nuvi 260 and now the Nuvi 255W. Buying the wide model was a wise choice. It is only one inch, but wow, it looks much bigger. The turn arrow on the top is new on the 255W, it is great. A quick glance tells where to turn. The time that it takes to acqure the Satellites is about 10-30 seconds. My 260 and 200 about 1 to 2 minutes. Moving the + and - buttons to the right side is no big deal. Many of the same features that are on the 260 are on the 255W. As to some of the new features, I am still learnig about them.
I am happy that I bought the 255W. I will give it a workout next week, when I drive from Massachusetts to Florida for the winter.

One final thought, remember a GPS is a guide. You know your hometown better than any GPS on the market. You know the back roads, a GPS almost never uses them.

Nov. 10 2008, Reached Florida, 1535 miles with my 255W. I only drove to Lorton VA. and put my SUV and me on the auto train. I took My GPS and the mount with an ac charger(had from my 260)on board. All the seats now have ac outlets, so I stuck my 255w on the window and plug it in. I set to off road and put in Sanford Fl, off we went. It worked liked it was in a car. It was fun to know where you are and the speed that you are going and the time you will be there. The trip is about 16 hours and it stayed on for the whole trip. We were to be in Sanford FL. around 9:00 AM, but the GPS said we should be there by 8:15 AM. I said that we would be early to the people around me. Over the PA they said this was one of the fastest trips they have made. The GPS was right on for the time. Still have the 260(in my wife's car).I get to use the 255w.

   Summary: Garmin Bday Gift
I was pleased with the purchase of this gift for my husband. The screen is big enough to view maps, street names, etc easily. The instructions are easy to follow and the product is easy to use. My husband loves it. He was happy to learn that it can be used for other things such as viewing digital pictures.
