What if one device could help you navigate anywhere in the U.S. and Canada, while offering travel tips, storing your favorite tunes and photos, providing translation assistance, and more? That device is here, and it's not much bigger than a deck of cards. The Garmin nüvi 350 is set to revolutionize what we expect from a GPS navigation device, or from any device for that matter. Which nüvi is Best for You?: Click here to see a quick, simple comparison of features for all Garmin nuvi GPS navigators
With a total weight of 5.1 ounces and slim measurements of 3.87 x 2.91 x 0.87 inches (WxHxD), the nüvi 350 is just right for the pocket or purse. A bright, 64,000-color display dominates the front of the device and a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels means that there's plenty of room for displaying map data and other elements of the device's interface. An SD memory card slot is provided for expansion software, such as a points of interest database, media files and electronic guides (see below). The flip-up antenna includes an MCX-type connector for connecting the unit to an external GPS antenna. Meanwhile, a powerful built-in speaker resides on the back of device. A built-in lithium ion battery will give you for to eight hours of battery life, depending on use. In addition to an AC charger, the unit also ships with a 12-volt power adapter for vehicle charging, as well as a windshield suction cup mount. Fortunately, Garmin has made it easy to interface with the nüvi 350's 700 megabytes of onboard memory, thanks to "plug-and-play" USB mass storage support. Just plug the device into your computer's USB port and you've got instantaneous access to all the audio books, music, photos, supplemental maps and other data on the nüvi 350's internal and SD card memory. Navigation As mentioned, the nüvi 350 comes packed with mapping data for North America, but you can can also load up your custom points of interest. Set up proximity alerts for school zones, safety cameras, and more using Garmin's free POI (points of interest) loader program (available from garmin.com). Important note about map updates: Due to our high volume of sales, almost every Garmin portable GPS navigator sold by Amazon.com will come with the most recent map version. If you ever do need a map update, you can purchase one from Amazon.com at our Garmin Store.
Navigation is just part of the journey, and the nüvi 350 is one of the first devices to recognize that. The built-in "Travel Kit" offers an MP3 player, an audio book player from Audible.com, a jpeg-format picture viewer, a world travel clock with time zones, a currency converter, a measurement converter, and a calculator. In addition to the included travel tools, additional software add-ons are available, such as the Garmin Language Guide, with data provided by Oxford University Press. This software suite contains a multilingual word bank, phrase bank, and five bilingual dictionaries. The multilingual word bank and phrase bank supports nine languages and dialects, including American English, British English, French, German, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, European Portuguese, European Spanish, and Latin American Spanish. Now you can look up and translate more than 17,000 words or 20,000 phrases per language -- right in the palm of your hand. Through the unit's text-to-speech interface, users can get a spoken pronunciation of each entry in the word bank, along with gender and part of speech information. Another useful add-on software package, the Garmin Travel Guide, is loaded with information provided by Marco Polo. These guides put in-depth travel information such as reviews and recommendations for restaurants, tourist attractions, and more at your fingertips. The software allows you to navigate to an address or search points of interest-- places like hotels, restaurants, shopping, and tourist attractions. The nüvi 350 automatically calculates the fastest route and provides voice-prompted turn-by-turn directions along the way. The unit also audibly announces the name of upcoming streets-- letting you keep your eyes on the road while navigating through busy traffic and tricky roadways. And if you stray off course, the nüvi 350 automatically calculates the quickest way to get back on track. *Traffic services available only in select cities where RDS-TMC coverage exists. Requires the GTM 10 FM TMC traffic receiver and subscription fee to enable traffic capability.

Summary: The best This is possibly the best investment I have ever made. It has prevented me from gettin lost a few times now. I highly recommend it! Summary: What happens when it breaks? I used this GPS for a bit over a year, around 15 months during which time I drove around 23,000 miles. During that time I thought it was one of the best purchases I had made. However, recently it randomly decided to stop logging onto the satellites. I am outdoors, using it in areas I have regularly used it and previously had no problems, I have not moved hundreds of miles since the last login but it still won't get a good connection. When it does it quickly goes away and says it has lost the satellite reception (usually within 5 minutes and considering it'll take hours to connect that's just unsatisfactory). I tried talking to Garmin and while they did give me generic "try this" none of it helped and they wanted me to shell out a couple hundred dollars for them to look at it even though it has only been in use for a little over a year. I am better off just buying a new gps system than repairing it! As such I am now looking for another brand as I'm unhappy with Garmin support. That being said here's what I thought of it while it worked: Cons: -If you put in multiple destinations it will not sort them by what would be the most logical order to stop at them, however you put them in, that's the order you are taken to them in (not uncommon among most gps's) -When searching for restaurants or stores it'll regularly bring up locations that aren't there, 10 minutes later you'll drive by one on a different side of town that it doesn't know exists (somewhat expected but this happened much more regularly than I expected) -Garmin support: I really felt as though they were trying to rip me off and just get money from me without knowing what was causing the problem or how they were even going to fix it -Map updates: while it may be somewhat standard in the industry to charge customers for regular map updates I think companies like Navigon that charge one fee for 3 entire years of updates are serving customers more justly -Inputting addresses: CR 528 can't be input the way it would be written on a letter, if it's not exact the 350 doesn't know what you're talking about -Time estimation for destination arrival is usually aggressive, I'd prefer it to be more conservative so when I'm on an eight hour drive I know from the start I'm going to get there in 8 hours and not 7. Pros: -It will get you where you're going -Before it initially broke, the time it took to get a satellite connection was relatively short -Customizable icons and voices (although you can't record your own or someone else's to use) -Several different route choices: fastest, shortest ect -Ability to program it to avoid U-turns, toll roads, and ferry's (most gps's these days all have the last two characteristics) -Routing is typically good and sensible although there are several spots in the US where it gets a little goofy All in all, for the price it's at now it's probably worth it, I spent around $300 but don't be surprised if Garmin doesn't care about you or the product when it breaks. Hopefully yours won't break as soon or unexpectedly. Personally, I'm done using Garmin products. Summary: GARMIN NUVI 350 Very familiar with this item as I have a NUVI 360 for work. NUVI 350 is basically same but no Bluetooth. That's OK. Got it to go w/ my wife's new car. Simple, reliable, easy to use. Still rated top budget GPS on CONSUMERSEARCH. Amazon price of $199 was the best deal I could find. Summary: A Welcome Companion My wife and I bought the Nuvi 350 -- our first GPS -- right before we took a 500-mile vacation trip. It was surprisingly easy to use. We just typed in our destination address, and it guided us there. The best part was that any time we stopped or missed a turn, it "recalculated" and directed us back to our main route. It was also very helpful in telling us which lane to be in for the next turn. It would have been more helpful in a couple of instances had we downloaded and installed the most recent software from the Garmin website -- before our trip. At first, having a strange female voice in the car, telling us where to go, was a bit disconcerting. But we grew so fond of it that we named our nuvi "Louise." For the price, this is a great product. Summary: Does not work in big cities I used this in Chicago and it was hopeless. It could not identify where I was and kept "recalculating" even though I was not moving. It kept receiving mixed signals and though I was right in front of my destination, it kept telling me to go round and round. The suction cup that came with the unit did not work and will afix to the windshield. It was a good thing that I had a friend and a map with me on that day. Do not buy! |
