Summary: Great Monitor! I purchased this monitor a little over a week ago and have been thoughly impressed. I wasn't sure about spending so much money on a Gateway monitor, but after reading all the reviews from everyone I went ahead and purchased it. My only real concern was that I read a few times about backlight seepage, so far I have not had any problems with that. The Picture-In-Picture feature is awesome! I have been messing around with extending my desktop to it and watching video that way. The only thing I have noticed when I am watching video on either input it is a little choppy, but I am blaming my video card for this (its pretty cheap) it's an XFX GF 7300GT 512mb, and while it should have more than enough video ram, it cant seem to handle it. But I used to have a Samsung 193P and when I watched some HD video I transfer from my TiVo on that it was really dark, barely visible. Whereas when I played in on this monitor it was gorgous! Colorwise the only thing I have noticed is that it is brighter than my old Samsung LCD, but not much. I have calibrated it by eye and I think it is pretty spot on. I am a web designer so I have to have color as closely calibrated to what everyone sees on their monitor and I feel this one does that very well. It does run a little hot on the back, but that is to be expected with a monitor so large. Contrary to other reviews I had read I feel the stand is really stable and the monitor moves up and down with hardly any effort (remember that when you go to pick it up to move it!) The EZ Tune software is fine, nothing to exciting, but I dont know what could be more exciting about monitor software... I dont have the soundbar so I dont know how that works. I havn't tried the HD, Componet or Composite video inputs yet, but I dont know how there could be any problems with them. I wish it had a tv tuner in it, nothing exciting just a basic one for the P-I-P. The USB plugs are handy, but the two that are on the back with the other inputs can get a little crowded. Over all if you need the monitor real estate this is great monitor! Just run though the manual calibration to get it to a level that wont kill your eyes. Summary: Every large LCD has a compromise...this one is no different No matter if you go with an IPS, an MVA, or a TN panel (which this monitor is), there are concessions you will have to make. The IPS are too expensive, the MVA (ala Dell 24") are too slow for gaming, and the TN have an issue where, if you are not looking directly at the monitor, the colors will warp. I definitely have this problem with the TN, and I have learned to accept it. This is clearly not the right monitor for you if you are doing any sort of professional art/photo work. Compared to all the sub $600 24" monitors, this one is the best. I have taken a look at several of the other 24" TN panels such as the Samsungs and the HP (which is the 2nd best, IMHO) and I returned all the others and kept this one. This is the best-looking TN panel on the market. No other TN panel can reproduce shades of gray and vibrant color as well as this one. In this regard, the glossy coating helps out immensely. If you don't like the glare, you need to figure out how to fit blinds to your windows or do a better job of choosing where you put your computer in your house. If you buy this monitor, please remember to turn down the brightness from the default to something around 5-10 or whatever you feel is the least acceptable level of brightness. Otherwise, your screen WILL suffer from light bleeding on the edges of the panel. How to check? Put the blank screensaver on your computer, turn the lights out, and watch the boundary of light around the edge. This is a problem with the monitor, but I did not notice it ruining images and is really more of an annoyance than an issue that hurts the functionality of the monitor. The gloss is great, the bezel is the nicest of ANY 24" monitor out there, and it loaded with features (VGA, DVI, HDMI, composite, s-video, and component? Incredible...it even comes with both DVI and VGA cables, a pleasant surprise). IN SUMMARY: If you are a casual gamer who also cares a great deal about image quality but doesn't want to blow $750 on an IPS panel, this is your best compromise of the bunch. Summary: great! Great product. I did a lot of shopping before I purchased. Awesome monitor, awesome price. Summary: Who Would Have Guessed??? I've been using this Gateway monitor for over three months now and it has meet or exceeded all of my expectations. My primary goal was to find a true 1080p 1920 x 1200 high definition monitor with HDMI input that would take input from my cable providers HD-DVR. With little success I searched all the major manufacturers preferring to stick to major brands and hadn't even considered Gateway until I saw this unit on display at my local Circuit City. It has performed flawlessly and the touch panel that allows me to switch between HDMI,DVI and VGA inputs is a real bonus. In a limited amount of space, I'm able to keep all my equpment together and toggle between watching HDTV recordings and live broadcasts, switch to the DVI input to use my Mac Mini and the VGA input for my HP PC. Granted, the touch panel and it's multi level menus has a bit of a learning curve, but once you get the hang of it there are many really useful features. HDTV image quality is excellent and some of the high definition videos available for download from Microsoft are such high quality that watching them on this monitor makes you feel like you are looking out a window. Although I have heard negative things about other Gateway products, this monitor comes close to perfect. If I were to try to find any fault with this monitor, all I could say is that at max settings it's too bright, but that's an easy fix. Summary: Very nice monitor, but... This monitor is really nice, but, I took off one star for the glossy surface that reflects like a mirror. I took off another star because every time I start it up, it asks me to select the language preference. There has to be a way to turn that off, but it's not an option I've found yet. On the positive side, I decided on this monitor because you can easily hook up both a computer and a game console. |
