 Written on February 25, 2006 Summary: It rocks As expceted this CD is full of great music. Up to and above Yoko Kanno standar. Written on February 6, 2006 Summary: Wonderfully different from the usual I've been a fan of "Ghost In the Shell" ever since a literature professor at Georgia Tech recommended watching the 1st movie after we had studied William Gibson's "Neuromancer". He was (and to my knowledge still is) a brilliant professor with a great understanding of how human behavior and technological advances are intertwined. Years after graduation, I was downsized and looking for work --- then I got hooked on anime' (actually "re-hooked") watching Adult Swim on The Cartoon Network until 3:00am every night. I eventually ran across "Stand Alone Complex" and it was GREAT to see the familiar characters and their world again! I finally got another job, got a DISH, and started using the built-in DVR(digital video recorder) to catch every episode. My wife finally got irritated at me for eating up all of the recorder's capacity on "cartoons" and I bought the whole set on DVD. It's worth every nickel. The day I got it, I watched all of the episodes back-to-back in a caffine induced eyeball-bleeding marathon; 13-14 hrs non-stop on a 52" high res TV with surround sound :o) This CD is a great "grab bag" of alot of the best tracks from the series. It's a WONDERFUL breather from listening to the usual "Pearl Jam"/"Creed" sound-alikes. The sound is almost heavy metal, but with an exotic twist. It's familar enough to not be totally alien, but different enough to make the people around wonder what that cool music is. You'd better have a really nice sound system (especially in your car) because the sound range of the music is all over the map. It WILL test your patience with your equalizer settings to get it JUST right. This is a CD I don't regret buying at all. From the familiar "Lithium Flower"(ending credit music) to the pumping beat and Russian lyrics of "Inner Universe"(opening music) it's all good and will keep you hitting the repeat button. If you're a fan of GITS, this is definitely worth spending time with. Written on January 16, 2006 Summary: Perfezionare Since the advent of electronic music, we've been culturally conditioned to associate techno with the future (as what I think). Yoko uses this to her advantage, combining that concept with guitar based rock'n'roll or Russian choral variations to create something familiar yet different enough to sound as thought it had originated in our future. Her production of this album is flawless !! She manages to effortlessly maintain the continuity of her particular compositional style without creating schlocky, ham-fisted house and electronica music. Part of what keeps each track sounding fresh is Yoko's collaboration with different lyricists and vocalists. Lyricist Troy and singer Ilaria Graziano combine their talents and create other-worldly vocalizations of dreamscapes over a pulsing electronic beat. Tim Jensen works with such diverse singers a Hide, Scott Matthew and Origa to create more rock'n'roll based pieces that convey a sense of post-modern angst. And Origa, best known for her performance on the opening track, Inner Universe. Lovely track <3 Along with Shanti Snyder, they have composed a haunting and transcendent lyric, a perfect accompaniment to Yoko Kanno's beautiful thumping electronic score. This song truly encapsulates the beauty of the animation, the genius of the storylines and the zeitgeist of the world of tomorrow. I'm mean sure the anime itself is a bit dull, but can be seen STILL as a masterpiece. BEST TRACK Inner Universe. Not only is this song magnificent in the way it brings the future into the here and now, it's a magnificent song with insightful chord progressions and harmonies that could make a cybernetic heart ache. WORST TRACK There is no worst track on this album. Yoko Kanno's compositions and arrangements are never ham-fisted. Each piece is well planned and superbly executed. Perfect for Fans of: Radiohead, Bjork, Lo-Fidelity All-stars, Cirque du Soliel soundtracks, or just any jpop/jrock, or even techno or genral electronica and jazz fans. OVERALL, Yoko Kanno has an uncanny ability to capture a series in song. Her genius is evident in the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex soundtrack. Technological advances seem to charge ahead of Humanity's capacity to modify the existing ethical paradigm. This ethical lag creates a sense of alienation that is difficult to place or rectify. Written on December 13, 2005 Summary: Perfect in everyway. This soundtrack is absolutely perfect in every way, shape, and form. Showcasing exceptional tracks from the lovely Yoko Kanno that shows her excpetional talent in creating epic, fun, and emotional music. This is one hell of a soundtrack. Run Rabbit Junk 8/10 Fun, fast-paced song with fun lyrics. Great game to listen to while playing a first-person shooter. Yakitori 10/10 A perfect song to drive to. Will be a favorite for fans of Chicago and other related bands. Stamina Rose 10/10 I loved this song from the series and even more when I heard it on the soundtrack - even if it's a short song. The vocals and jungle-type drums are compelling and emotional. I love this track. Surf 7/10 A good song to just relax to. Gives a rest from the fast-paced three songs. Where Does This Ocean Go? 9/10 Another easy listening song with compelling lyrics and vocals by the stunning vocalist Ilaria Graziano. Train Search 8/10 Fast-paced and heavy. Another good song to listen to when gaming. Siberian Doll House 6/10 It has a intresting sound to it and easy to listen to. Velveteen 7/10 Very intresting and creepy. Ilaria does a good job in the song as well. Lithium Flower 8/10 I dislike this style but this song is so fun to listen to. Home Stay 7/10 Resembles alot like Surf but a bit more fast paced. A very fun song to listen to. Inner Universe 20/10 Quite possibly one of the best songs made for an anime. This song, to me, is the heart and soul of GitS: SAC. The song is emotional, powerful, compelling, epic, and above all - amazing. The Russian singer Orgia, who lends her beutiful voice, blends Greek, Latin, and English perfectly to lyrics that are equally powerful. This type of song only comes once in a great while. Fish - Silent Cruise 9/10 A surprising song that evolves; changign it's tune and style during the course of the song. Very unique. Some Other Time 7/10 Beutiful and melodic. A song that you can listen to while you sleep. The vocalist voice is beutiful as well. Beauty Is Within Us 5/10 This is th eonly song I truly skipped in this c.d. To me, it sounded to much like Lithium Flower (proably because it's the same vocalist). It does get intresting near the middle of the song. Sad and dark lyrics. We're the Great 7/10 A very fun song to listen to. It may not be upbeat or quirky but it's just - fun. Very Beatle-esque. Monochrome 8/10 Another favroite track on this c.d. All the mechanic sounds are fun. It is also a very sad and beutiful song by Ilaria. Sounds alot like "Where Does this ocean Go" but sadder. GET9 [TV Size] 5/10 Great song but wants to hear more of it. I like the Jazz and swing which is unique for this soundtrack. Rise [TV Size] 9/10 Was able to hear the song in it's entirety and it is somehting special. Though not as good as Inner Universe, it follows the trend of greek, Latin, and English and sung on Origa. This c.d., to be is legendary. Written on November 6, 2005 Summary: Impressed as expected This soundtrack is a wonderful example of Yoko Kanno's musical expertise. Yoko is also the composer of music from japanese animation titles such as Vision of Escaflowne and Macross Plus, as well as music for some of Koei's well renouned Final Fantasy games. Ms. Kanno uses moving and adventurous themes with orchestral, jazz and experimental elements. The Ghost In The Shell creators could not have found a better composer to successfully explore the themes of multiculture and foreign affairs of the future, for the Stand Alone Complex anime series. |
