 Written on December 20, 2007 Summary: Buy them at a store I have no problem with the bulbs, but they were shipped loose in a box with some Fill-Air on top. Needless to say, many of them showed up in pieces. Broken glass was falling out of the boxes as I picked them up. Not good. I assumed they would be in clam shell packaging like the ones you would buy at Home Depot or Lowes, but that's not the case. It'd be easier to just go to Home Depot or Lowes and pick them up. That way you'll know they're intact when you get them.  Written on December 19, 2007 Summary: Curly Bulbs--not so great These bulbs are being purchased by the millions based the questionable assumption that they are the right choice for environmentally conscious consumers. Maybe I'm the only one who has a problem with these supposedly long-lasting bulbs not lasting nearly as long as regular environmentally-incorrect bulbs. Two of them burned out in a day! Also, these bulbs contain mercury and have to be disposed of properly. Where I live, proper disposal involves delivering the bulbs to a special unit of the rubbish company, a drive way across town. More fossil fuels burned! How many millions of these bulbs are being tossed in the trash to poison the environment? Revised rating: *** 3 stars Recycling these bulbs is a thorny issue. For an informative discussion, Google "CFL Recycling Project" and read the PDF. An article in Slate Magazine says curly bulbs are peachy. The mercury content isn't enough to worry about. Go ahead and throw 'em away. Google "Slate CFL" to see the story. Now, if they can only get these dang bulbs to last as long as standard energy-hogging bulbs. I'm changing my rating to three stars (from one) because the Slate article is convincing.  Written on December 18, 2007 Summary: The bulb is good. The bulbs are fine. But they are not packed properly. They are loose in a box with inflated plastic packets, so they are touching each other. Then packed in a larger box. One of the bulbs was broken. Amazon replaced it with no problem. Written on December 11, 2007 Summary: Shipped loose in the box!! Amazon shipped these to me loose in a box with just an air pillow. The first set were completely smashed and the second arrived ok. Don't buy these! It is not worth the hassle to deal with - THESE BULBS ARE EXTREMELY HAZARDOUS WHEN BROKEN!!! The 13watt ones arrived just fine in their original packaging. I don't know if the loose bulbs are even eligible for a warranty. Written on December 11, 2007 Summary: Bulbs break in shipment Amazon packs the bulbs loosely in a medium sized box, so when they ship they break. Other than that, the ones that survive the trip to your door at least work. |
