Written on January 15, 2004 Summary: Cleanliness (of performance) IS Next to Godliness! It's hard to believe that my uncle didn't like this CD and claimed that they performed so clean that they seemed sterile. I personally LOVE groups that are so proficient as musicians that they can play as sharp as a tack. I love big bands like Buddy Rich and Stan Kenton but, while they take a "GO FOR IT!!!" attitude with playing, the results usually include missed releases and cracked notes. With the Big Phat Band, you get the best of both worlds: a performance close to musical perfection as well as an in-your-face attitude. Add to that guest appearances by musicians such as Arturo Sandoval and you have Grammy nominee easily. Tracks which I really enjoyed on this disc: Sing Sang Sung, which is a variation on the style of Sing Sing Sing, complete with clarinet a la Benny Goodman; Count Bubba, a real fun, laid back swing piece; and Samba Del Gringo, a hard driving Latin song. Written on November 12, 2003 Summary: Way over the Center Field Fence and Out of the Park Gordon Goodwin has some big-name stars on this CD, like Arturo Sandoval and Eddie Daniels, and they play like stars, but even without them this is a big band CD to listen to over and over! Goodwin's charts are accessible, and they would help bring about a big-band revival if more people were listening. But apart from "accessibility," which sounds pretty pale, they just swing like a mother. Along with the really big names, he's got some of the best jazz players in the LA area, and they're all over these charts--great section work everywhere you listen, screaming trumpets, bones to make you drool, you want to bow down in front of the sax and rhythm sections. Usually I listen to a CD once or twice and put it on the shelf for awhile, but this one is killer all the way--I'm still listening. Great solos, great, high energy ensembles--I'm looking for more Gordon Goodwin CDs. This is not avant-garde or adventurous, but, man, you can't do anything without swinging, and this band does the charts up royally. Written on June 28, 2003 Summary: Do this more often, Gordon! This CD is an excellent collection of some of jazz's finest musicians and their contemporay interpretation of what swing music is supposed to be. "Sing Sang Sung" is a marvelous version of the old Benny Goodman classic, and "Bach 2 Part Invention in D Minor" is as good as it gets. Order this one now--I guarantee you'll love it! I remember a little while back hearing my school jazz band play a song called "Sing Sang Sung" that was really cool, so I decided to find it's original recording. Man, did I ever hit the jackpot! This disc is the coolest thing i've heard in a while. I'm not much of a fan of the ballads, but everything else is just so cool! Written on April 25, 2003 Summary: BIG PHAT SOUND! I can't believe how lucky you guys are over there in the States! Some of the best music available which I have to "search" for on the net - yep, we're a little behind here in 'down under.' This album is one of the BEST finds so far. I can only echo the comments made above - pure, clean, crisp, and punchy with the right intensity for each song - the ballads are beautiful. I hope I haven't heard the last of Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band, although this musical masterpiece sounds like a 'one off' effort. Come on Gordon, let's have MORE of this superb music!! |
