Summary: Earle's Debut Has Weathered Well
I bought the original LP of this album way back when it was new, based upon a review in Rolling Stone. At that time, I found it a mixed bag of glossy country rock pop tunes (Guitar Town, Hillbilly Highway) infused with hints that Earle had a talent for writing songs that resonate with the kind of gritty reality that has to be lived before it can be sang. I couldn't help but wonder how "My Old Friend the Blues" would sound in an acoustic setting. There is a healthy "salt of the earth" dose in the best songs of Guitar Town".

Nearly two decades have passed since its release and if anything, I've grown to appreciate these songs more. The tunes that used to leave me flat have grown (in my mind's ear) into a coherent whole. Familiarity apparently does not always lead to contempt. Perhaps the process of hearing Earle's musical evolution has retrospectively shed light on these songs? Having lived some of these songs myself, I've always been able to find common ground, but Earle's survival instinct was not apparent back when this was new. Retrospectively, I'm more able to dismiss the pop concessions made in the production of this music, perhaps in part from learning more of the man's life story.

Other reviewers have commented favorably with the remastering of this disc. I'll agree with that and also add that the original was not problematic to the point of being a sore thumb. But the added warmth of the remastering is appreciated.

Summary: Debut album of rocking country music
When this album was released, Steve was acclaimed in some quarters as country music's version of Bruce Springsteen - high praise indeed. Subsequent albums have shown that comparisons with The Boss are spot on, including their political beliefs, but Steve has largely abandoned country music in favor of rock. He has never forgotten his roots, as he showed on The Mountain, an album that he recorded with bluegrass musicians, but he has never recorded another album quite like Guitar town.

Steve wrote or co-wrote all the songs on this album, which contains two major country hits (the title track and Hillbilly highway), both up-tempo rocking songs, which are typical of the album's style. Steve shows that he can do ballads too - just listen to My old friend the blues, a song subsequently covered by Janie Fricke for her album, Labor of love. Another great ballad is Someday, though I generally feel that Steve is at his best on the rocking up-tempo songs.

If you enjoy rocking country music as recorded by Travis Tritt, Marty Stuart and others like them, give this album a listen. If you are a fan of Steve's later music, you'll find this album somewhat different but you'll probably enjoy it. If you're a fan of The Boss, you should definitely give Steve's music a try.

Summary: i'd like to give this one another .5, but whatever
i have just recently become an enormous steve earle fan...but i don't much care about the material from his early years cavorting around nashville. nashville is exactly what is wrong with this album...considering earle's gravelly, chevy-truck-commercial vocal style, glossy production is the LAST thing he needs. but that's what this is. and while it's hard to keep a good song down ("guitar town," for instance, and "someday"), i have a hard time listening. just doesn't feel right, doesn't feel genuine. that's ok, though, because with my next earle purchase--el corazon--i hit much closer to the mark. i bought this one because, a) it's his debut album, and generally quite highly regarded, and b) one of my wife's favorite songs in the world is "guitar town" and the only copy of it she had was on a live album. that live recording, in fact, the only SE album she owned. and i just couldn't in good conscience let that pass.

Summary: Smart, Touching and Heroic music
Aside from the early classic period(Hank, Patsy, etc.), I had never been a country music fan. Driving through the night, I would sometimes listen to country stations and chortle at the cliches, the staged sentimentality and the totally phony "patriotism". Beyond horrible!!!! By chance, I got this on vinyl years ago and I loved it. I recently bought the CD and I am stunned; It is even better than I remember. Unlike most amazon reviews, the majority here are very well written, knowledgable, and perceptive. I am actually pleased to say that there is little that I can add. As I loaned this to someone last week, I said "after this you will never say a nasty word about country music again". I got a call last night asking for all of my other Steve Earle CD's. Wonderful,Wonderful,Wonderful. PS Though I agree that "Rock and Roller" is the weak link here, the pedal solo is as good as it gets.

   Summary: The Other Springsteen
Steve Earle was the other Springsteen in the 1980's - honest, blue-collar rock, written from personal experience. A must-have in any collection.
