Summary: this is the perfect umpc When I was looking for an umpc, this machine was my first choice. But at that time, it was the most expensive one on the market (about $600) and i settled for a $3xx EEEPC 900. After 1 month with the EEEPC, i just can't handle the tiny keyboard. Everything else about the EEEPC was good for my purpose. Then i saw this HP mininote on sale in Amazon for $299 and I immediately went for it. I got a basic model with 512m ram and 4gb SDD. I upgraded it with 2gb ram and a 250gb hdd ( cost about $100 in total), put XP Pro in it and the machine screams !! In comparison, it is way way way faster than the EEEPC. I can open up 3 or 4 applications in HP mininote and there is minimal lag. The keyboard is like fullsize to me and i am writing this review on it with so much ease. If you are looking for one of these UPMC, this is the one to get. But you MUST, you MUST put 2gb or ram in it to make it workable. HP is coming out with the mininote 1000, slightly bigger with a bigger screen. But then it loses the metal casing and turning it into an ugly plastic notebook. Adding these patterns on the plastic is useless since it is still plasticky. I highly recommend this machine. Summary: Disappointing Before I start you should know I am not a Linux user, but thought I would try it out. I rather liked it. I gave the two stars because the keyboard is great and the machine itself is sturdy and the monitor is nice and bright. However... After charging the battery fully I went through the set up and right after I completed it the computer froze. I thought it was a fluke and took it to class with me. I shut the screen and the computer did go to sleep, but it would not come back on. I removed the battery and rebooted it and ofcourse the next time I closed it at break it happened again. My battery that was fully charged did not last even two hours! I am not super savvy about computers so I am not going to go down that tech support road trying to fix this obvious flaw. I am returning it and will look for something more dependable. Summary: Great mini-note I really enjoyed this HP mini-note from the day I got it. It has all the features I was looking for. I did change the OS to windows XP w/ sp2 and have not had any problems. Just be sure if you do this that that XP is with sp2 or sp3 or else you will run into bios problems. This HP does get a little warm on the bottom, but not more then my old Dell laptop. It has a ton of extra features like web cam, built in mic, 120 G HD, 1 G of ram (I increased mine to 2 G w/ Kingston) and a lot more. It is a great little computer for the money. Summary: Excellent device after some tweaks I have the KX869AT model, which comes with SLED 10. However standby/suspend wasn't working initially. Looking at http://www.hp2133guide.com/forums/, I found the location on HP's site to download a BIOS update - applying that solved standby/suspend issues. I also changed the configuration to Ubuntu 8.04 and XP (dual boot), which really helped with the user experience. Ubuntu took some work to get going (there is a great Ubuntu install guide available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/HP2133) but it was worth it - it works very well. The device is really well designed and looks elegant. Typing on the keyboard is as good as a regular laptop, the touchpad (after adjustments) works very well, and the whole device just shows great build quality. I haven't seen any extraordinary heat/noise problems and get about 2 hours of battery life (w/WiFi on) with the 3-cell battery. I am very happy with my purchase for sure. Summary: Very nice but could definately use some work This mini PC has some excellent features but still lacking in some areas. the portability is definately a plus, very small, sleek and light to carry around, however, im running Vista Business edition. These machines arent even supposed to be recommended to run vista. Vista being a resource sucker, drastically slows this lil baby big time. Im sure XP would fly on this thing. The start up takes a little long as compared to my HP Desktop running the same OP. While playing itunes, working on a word doc i tried installing a program from my portable Lite On DVDRW drive and the machine was creeping. Excellent machine to have a portable secondary unit, but might not be the right choice if u want to load this baby up with progs and run them at the same time. |
