   Summary: just doesn't work
I bought this card to watch HDTV on my computer. I have a brand new computer with plenty of RAM and a decent graphics card (ATI X1300), but I can't get the HVR-1600 to play an HDTV signal for more than a couple seconds before it loses sync -- the video gets jerky and the sound cuts out. With regular cable TV, I can only watch for a couple minutes before the same thing happens.

I've tried following Hauppauge's troubleshooting instructions, and they were absolutely no help.

Also, one of the programs that comes with the horrible WinTV application (either the software for the IR remote or the app that lets you schedule recordings) kept making my computer crash (blue screen). This is in Windows XP. I just disabled both apps through msconfig since I don't use the IR remote and the card doesn't work well enough that I need to schedule and recordings, so I'm not sure which of the 2 was the culprit.

UPDATE (7/21/08): I guess an ATI X1300 isn't really all that as far as graphics cards go. (Now I know.) I upgraded to a NVIDIA GeForce 8600. Performance is slightly better, but still buggy -- now it can make it a few minutes before it loses sync -- before it lost sync after just a few seconds.

Summary: Worked OK with Vista Home Premium 32 bit
I had the Hauppauge 1600 working fine with Windows XP. I recently switched to Vista Home Premium in a new computer.

Vista recognized the card itself and installed a driver from Windows Update. It then worked with Windows Media Center with no other action on my part.

This card works well for me. My only wish would be for better Linux support.

Summary: WinTV-HVR-1600 is a piece of junk for Vista MCE
I bought WinTV-HVR-1600 one month ago and I still can not watch ATSC (HD TV) via Vista Media Center. The Hauppauge support center and I have worked on this problem more than one month. The problem can not be resolved. The function of this product does NOT meet the product description. It is a piece of junk

Summary: To use or not to use
Purchased WinTV to do HD recording into computer. With good signal from off-the-air antenna the Hauppauge would only find about half of the HD channels when it scanned.
I deemed it too much trouble to use and went with HD on Dishnetwork and a 722 DVR. Works excellent.
Just hope Hauppage comes through with the $20 rebate.

   Summary: good idea but...
This product has a great idea but I have a lot off interference with sound when I watch local channels. Even basic cable channels are not always cooperating with it. I am glad that I watch TV rarely. It would be different story for anyone who likes to watch a lot of programs.

Otherwise, it was easy to install. Remote works well but only with a TV.
