Written on September 14, 2008 Summary: The best way to really learn the subjects There are tons of positive reviews already written about this book, so I just thought I'd share a little about how I'm getting through the tutorials. First off, I think it helps to work through the book on a daily basis, rather than doing a few chapters and coming back to it weeks later. The concepts will be easier to follow complete the lessons one after another, and on a regular basis. Next, sometimes it helps to read and underline several pages and then go to the computer to do the lessons. Some lessons are very easy to complete, but it's important that you try to understand as much as possible the code language itself. The authors do a very good job explaining why the markups work the way they do. If you get stuck during a lesson, carefully check your typos, and make sure you have copied the lines of code as they are presented in the book. Even leaving out a semicolon in a line of HTML or CSS code can mess things up. If you find that you really are stuck, visit the book's Lab site and download the solution for exercises in each chapter. Compare the solution to your own work. If you still can't find figure the problem, use the solution and move on. Chapter 8 and 10 gave me lots of problems. I went on the Lab site to look for answers. There's a discussion forum on the Lab site, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of traffic on it. But leave your questions there anyway, and they might be answered. If you're very computer literate, you might also try a more advanced text editor than the one's they suggest in the book. I downloaded a copy of TextMate to help me complete the last three chapters of the book. TextMate has a steep learning curve, but it in the long run it can save you time when writing code manually. Finally, I would suggest applying what you learn by creating a mini-website or group of pages. By doing this, you can review the lessons and apply them. For those thinking about taking a college course in this subject, I would work through this book first. In fact, I bet it presents nearly everything you would learn in a introductory college course of HTML and CSS. The advantage of using this book is that you can learn at your own pace and not waste time in a classroom.  Written on September 11, 2008 Summary: Head First HTML I bought this book as a crutch to build my wifes business Cloud Nine Accessories and Gifts a web page that features handbags. This book assisted me through every phase of the development. I had a little bit of programming background and got the programming end done flawlessly. I now have to take a few pictures and it will be up and running. Written on September 9, 2008 Summary: Great Book for Beginners and Also for Refreshers I ordered this book to help my wife learn HTML and CSS, as she wants to start creating web pages/sites. Although I'm not a web developer/designer myself, I work in the IT industry and would rate my pre-existing HTML/CSS knowledge at about 4 out of 10. Based on the excerpts, it looked like the book would be an easy read and would be an easy way for my wife to get started with the basics. When I looked through the book, I found it to be written in an extremely friendly and very engaging format. I originally told myself that I was more interested in the authors' delivery methods than the content itself, but low and behold, I found myself learning more and more about the subject content without really trying to do so. I'm currently away from home on a business trip, and my wife just mentioned that she's spending as much time with the book as she can now, because she suspects that I'll be "borrowing" it again once I get back home... I think she's right. As others have indicated, this isn't a true "reference" book, but if you're looking for an easy and engaging read to learn the basics of HTML and CSS, or maybe refresh/expand on a limited understanding of the subject, this book does make it easy and fun. However, I also want to mention that the authors do spend a lot of time making sure that the reader is learning "proper" HTML/CSS methods - so the subject is also well detailed. This is the first "Head First" series book that I've seen, but based on what I've seen from this book, I'm certain that I'll be ordering some of the other "Head First" series on other topics as well. 5 stars! Written on August 30, 2008 Summary: Finally! A book that explains CSS positioning. I probably read half a dozen books on CSS and still never fully understood the "box model" or CSS positioning. "Head First HTML with CSS" was the first book to explain these concepts in a manner than even I could understand. I was impressed enough to buy my own copy. Highly recommended for someone who wants to understand the basics of HTML, XHTML and CSS. Not recommended for someone who already knows these subjects and and looking for a more in-depth reference. Written on July 26, 2008 Summary: Awesome book for deeply learning of HTML & CSS This book is really nice. The way of using a lot of pictures works for me. I love reading it, and I was excited every time I enter a new chapter. Very good for beginner web developer to understand clearly about the concept of HTML & CSS. |
