Professional Review:
US version includes two bonus tracks, 'Stand My Ground' and 'What Have You Done' (Extended Version). 2007 release from the Dutch Gothic Metal band who have been pounding the Metal pavement with their unique brand of hard-edged Metal for over a decade. Their sound is the perfect combination of guitar-driven Hard Rock and ambitious Symphonic Metal. Underneath the aggressive wall of sound lies a secret beauty that can often be dark and uninviting. 13 tracks including 'Howling', 'Frozen' and 'Final Destination'.

   Summary: Another EXCELLENT album!
I was able to see Within Temptation LIVE during the tour for this album back in Sept. '07. OH MY GOD!!!!!! They were even better in person! I recommend this album and ever other album this band has. Never have I had a band that I absolutely LOVED everything that they sang. If you get a chance to see them in concert, take my advise...GO! You will NOT be disappointed. I hope they come back to the US this year for another tour. I'll be there! If you like Sharon's singing, check her out in "No Compliance" by Delain. AWESOME!!!!!

   Summary: A musical masterpiece
This is the album of the year. Every song in this album is amazing. It's clear that these guys put a lot of work and time on each and every song they write. The production values are over the top, and the song writing is phenomenal. Within Temptation makes most other rock bands sound bland, simple, and weak. The unslaught of instruments and melodies will overload your senses. The lyrics are poetic and passionate-just listen to "Forgiven" and try not to feel her pain. Sharon Den Adel is simply the best singer in the business. I've seen them in concert, and yes, she sounds as good as in the album. Every person I've introduced to Within Temptation has gotten hooked on them. With a singer like that, it's amazing these guys don't get airplay. I guess their music is simply too sophisticated for American radio. I just hope they don't dumb down their music to get airplay. Just do yourself a favor and buy this album, you'll be one of a select few to enjoy this masterpiece the rest of America is missing out on.

Summary: Pompous, overblown, symphonic - best album of 2007
Firstly, comparing Within Temptation unfavourably to Evanescence is a bit like turning your nose up at Bollinger whilst simultaneously extolling the virtues of Wal Mart cut-price grape juice. Amy Lee whines a bit and navel-gazes a lot and writes largely inane lyrics and occasionally comes up with a half-decent song like Going Under.
WT, on the other hand, boast Sharon den Adel whose ethereal voice is a thing of great beauty, great passion and great power. WT's songwriting is far more subtle and interesting - these guys (and gal) know their way round a fantastic tune. Oh, and if we're talking chronology and copy-cattery, WT's inception pre-dates that of Evanescence by about two years. If you MUST compare WT to any band, let it be one of the calibre of The Gathering or Nightwish. (Both of whom I have a soft spot for, but neither of whom surpass WT in my eyes.)
So, anyway, T.H.O.E. is a classic. It bulges with a handful of songs which have already joined the Heavy Metal pantheon forever, I believe. Yes, I think The Howling, What Have You Done?, Frozen, Our Solemn Hour, The Cross and Forgiven have all earned the right to be mentioned in the same breath as Black Sabbath, Better By You, Better Than Me, The Phantom of the Opera (think the Maiden rather than Michael Crawford and West End/Broadway stages!), In the Still of the Night, One, Angel of Death, Livin' On A Prayer, The Final Countdown, Samarithan, The Clerical Conspiracy, Smoke on the Water, Stairway to Heaven, Let There Be Rock, K.I.N.G., Spiritual Healing, Wild Child, Eye of the Tiger, In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, Ace of Spades, Bohemian Rhapsody etc etc etc.
Sure, T.H.O.E. sags a bit in the final third, but there's not an album in existence that doesn't have its boring bits. WT are a phenomenon. They are a peerless live band and you get the feeling that, sure, as they mature they progress and evolve in all sorts of ways, but they started off with such astounding quality that their earlier albums are as essential as this one. I mean, jeez! Enter and Restless and Ice Queen and Mother Earth and Caged and Deceiver of Fools and Angels and Stand My Ground and Memories.... they've come up with classic after classic ever since they burst onto the scene. I don't see this kind of quality in any other band today. WT are the epitome of Metal in the Noughties!

Summary: At the Pinnacle: Within Temptation
This is truly the breakout album for Within Temptation. It's smart. It's clever. It has fantastic melodies and fabulous lyrics. In a nutshell, THIS is what alternative/symphonic metal is all about. If you like thier early work, this will blow you away!

Some of my special favs are:

What Have You Done Now, the duet with Keith Caputo: Holy Cow - this song is not only an album best, but a genre best.

Frozen: Great melody and lyrics. The support music lends to a flawless mix of storytelling and emotion.

Our Solemn Hour: My favorite on the disc for it's heavy use of choir, symphony and chord changes. I sometimes get stuck on this song for an hour - YES, it's that good.

Hand of Sorrow: Brilliant piano opening, heavy use of choir and lyrically strong.

I haven't written a review in over a year, but this album was worth the write. Trust me, you won't go wrong!!
