Summary: Soundtrack to the severely underrated film
Even though the costly film was a box office disappointment (although it was one of the year's biggest grossers, it failed to break even), it is still somewhat surprising that the soundtrack counterpart faired so poorly, stalling at a dismal #46 on the Hot 200. That said, the disc is certainly enjoyable, with Jerry Herman's memorable song score well represented. It's certainly true that, as the music was recorded to accompany the film's action, several of the numbers do not necessarily work when divorced from the environment in which they were meant to be heard. Also, the considerable vocal limitations of cast members Walter Matthau and Marianne McAndrew become much more obvious when the listener is unable to watch the performer "act" the song onscreen and has to rely solely on the actor's thin vocal alone.

Streisand, however, is in typically exceptional voice, effortlessly navigating the intricate wordplay of "Just Leave Every to Me" and effectively tugging on heart strings with beautifully aching renditions "Love is Only Love" and the "It Takes a Woman" reprise. Streisand also delivers an absolutely virtuoso performance of the showstopping "So Long, Dearie" and breathes new life into the immortal title song, which features a memorable mid-song appearance from Louis Armstrong. The disc reaches it's pinnacle with Streisand's stunning rendition of "Before the Parade Passes By," an absolutely mind-blowing vocal performance if there ever was one. While several of the album's tracks may not hold up as well outside the context of the film, Streisand's terrific transcend any such difficulties and remain reason enough to enjoy this soundtrack recording.

Summary: One of the Greatest Movies of the Late 60's
Hello Dolly is one of my favorite films. It's one of those movies that I have seen time and time again and never tire of watching. The score is beautifully sung by all involved (yes, even Michael Crawford with his nasal, but pleasant, singing voice). Streisand steals the show as Dolly, of course. And no, she does not seem too young for the role ... The film would be at a loss without her beautiful, flawless singing voice. I also have the Carol Channing 1964 original cast album. Sorry to say it, die-hard-Carol-Channing-fans, but I have a hard time visualizing her as Dolly in the film (although she is great on the album). Her voice is unique and charming, but the score is really better done by someone who can sing!

I have to hold back from giving 5 stars, though, due to the sound quality of the disc and incompleteness of this recording. The sound quality on several parts of the disc has much to be desired. The sound is somewhat distorted and tinny during the louder sequences. The disc is also incomplete. While the music contained herein would have been quite sufficient for the limited playing time of vinyl records, an effort should be made to expand the CD to include additional material. Missing from the disc are the "Call on Dolly" chants which open the film, the wonderful OVERTURE, additional material in DANCING and BEFORE THE PARADE PASSES BY, the entire Waiters' Dance in the Harmonia Garden sequence, as well as the chase music which closes that sequence. Wasn't there Exit Music too? There is also a lot of underscoring that accompanies the Harmonia sequence that we would like to see released. Perhaps 20th Century-Fox will put out a RESTORED and EXPANDED soundtrack album when this film comes out on DVD (whenever that happens; hopefully soon!).

Even with its FEW flaws, I highly recommend this soundtrack. And see the movie if you get a chance, too. The VHS is out of print and not yet released on DVD. It airs on the Fox Movie Channel from time to time. Oh to see this spectacle in the movie house, in W I D E S C R E E N and 6 track STEREO! When it comes out on DVD I'll be the first in line to get a copy!

Summary: Works better as an album than as a movie!
Didn't care for the film, with Streisand battling stuffy Walter Matthau for the spotlight, but the soundtrack is everything the movie was not: pert, perky, bubbly, sensual, humorous and grand. "Just Leave Everything To Me" is a perfect vehicle for Streisand's rapid-fire delivery and "Before The Parade Passes By" is amazing(Barbra re-recorded this song for 45 single release--a shorter, more "pop" version, and it's terrible; stick with this version). "So Long Dearie" is another Streisand triumph, one of those lost Streisand numbers that never pops up on any of her "best of" packages. I think some of this music suits her better than the pop songs she was doing on her solo outings. B+

   Summary: A great musical!
I very highly recommend this cd of "Hello Dolly," it's wonderful! It's a musical treat for all. Barbara Streisand sings so beautifully, and Michael Crawford's voice was so beautiful back then as well. I think anyone would enjoy this cd and it should get 10 stars!

Summary: Elephantine film soundtrack of popular stage musical comedy
Onstage HELLO DOLLY! was an intimate, fast and fun show. Blown up out proportion for the TODD-AO screen, the film version lumbered across the screen and though gaining in its three production numbers (PUT ON YOUR SUNDAY CLOTHES, BEFORE THE PARADE PASSES BY, HELLO, DOLLY!), it lost all of the required intimacy. Discussing the orchestrations themselves, they lacked punch and the pacing was rather slow, sometimes almost snail-like. Marianne McAndrew's rendition of RIBBONS DOWN MY BACK is deadly - by the way she gets no credit on the CD, either for this solo nor for her shared IT ONLY TAKES A MOMENT - with Michael Crawford. Crawford himself is the skinny, gawky clown he was in his youth - with a squeaky singing voice - nothing like the melifluous tenor/baritone he has become with added age and weight. All of the singing cast is forgettable with the exception of Streisand, although the attempt to add pizzazz to the score misfires in her too fast renditions of JUST LEAVE EVERYTHING TO ME and SO LONG DEARIE. The anachronistic presence of Louis Armstrong as himself in a film dated eleven years before his actual birth - just to take advantage of the fact that he made a singles hit with the title tune - gives you an idea of how serious the makers took the film.

The original sound was muffled and tinny on the 20th Century Fox records and cassette releases. It has been remixed and brightened for this CD release although it still cannot be called rich or balanced. In ELEGANCE Ms. Peaker sounds like she is singing from behind a curtain and the chorus often sounds as if it's out on the street singing through a window. Although the orchestrations won one of the film's three Oscars, it was not a stellar hour for the musical film world.

This recording and the film "just miss" - there is the feeling that all involved are just too tired to carry the weight of it all. It lags when it should sparkle, it trips when it should glide.

Ms. Streisand valiantly carries on and is the sole reason for buying the soundtrack.

Note: The original show had only eleven songs - very few for a Broadway musical of its time. Two were dropped (I PUT MY HAND IN and MOTHERHOOD) and two new songs were added - JUST LEAVE EVERYTHING TO ME - which replaced I PUT MY HAND IN - and LOVE IS ONLY LOVE, a rather dull love song dropped from the original score of MAME.
