 Written on April 14, 2008 Summary: Let all the poisons that lurk in the mudd hatch out This is, by far, the greatest miniseries ever made. The story is horrifying yet compelling, the writing is crisp and memorable, and the acting is on such a high level that one feels as if he is part of the tale. I, Claudius is a must have for any video collection. Written on April 9, 2008 Summary: A Pleasure It was a delight to get this when the price finally dropped to what I considered reasonable. I had forgotten how good it was. Also the supplemental material on a never-released 1937-vintage film on the same topic was very interesting.  Written on April 2, 2008 Summary: And by the way... don't touch the figs. The one star is for this disastrous release of this great miniseries; DO NOT BUY IT. Wait and hope for better things! Image Entertainment have always been wanting in their releases and I hope to the gods in heaven that somebody with the know-how snaps up the Region 1 dvd/bluray release rights to this extraordinary journey through Roman Imperial history and gives it the royal treatment it deserves. For starters, go back to the original tapes, if they are in good condition, and remaster the entire show. Fawlty Towers is a miracle of improvement on dvd, so why can't I, Claudius get the same care and attention. The Show Itself: some of the best writing and acting you will ever see, either on television or the big screen, this highly accurate, though heavily dramatized, illustration of the first four Roman Emperors is a jaw-dropping, hilarious, disturbing, legendary wallow. Forget the Sopranos; why bother with latter day petty criminals when you can go back and watch how the big boys (and girls) did it? Sure, the age-makeup is pretty bad, sure it's shot on video, sure the sets, which otherwise look fantastic, jiggle whenever someone happens to lean against them, but this series still tops anything with a much larger budget. Ridley Scott's GLADIATOR uses I,Claudius as a springboard for it's drama (even using one or two of it's actors). I,CLAVDIVS is a masterpiece, so much so that when one is finished with all thirteen episodes (about eleven hours total) one wishes it had been shot on film for the big screen. Still, it is what it is, and that happens to be unsurpassable. Now... can we please get the damned thing properly remastered so that I can lie on my couch, eat grapes and watch it in a day-long marathon? Please?? Written on February 26, 2008 Summary: Closed Captions, Please! This is such a Wonderful thing. I am so glad that I first saw it when I could still hear-----now, I have to guess at what they say! I recently saw the series "Rome", it was good but paled in comparison to "I, Claudius". Written on February 18, 2008 Summary: First there was I Claidius, then there Was Rome Outstanding. If you've watched the wonderful Rome series from HBO, then you need to watch this as well. You'll discover quite as I did that those women had too much time on their hands merely sipping wine and eating olives and figuring out who they were going to poison next. |
