Professional Review:
This 1974 Norman Jewison film may have been a critical misstep, but some fans actually preferred it to Broadway's rock spectacle. The thing is, Jesus Christ Superstar was first introduced as a two-disc rock opera, not unlike the Who's Tommy, as it even scored several Top 40 hits. While no set matches the original, it's still hard to go wrong with the music, no matter what the source. This also includes the pretty "Could We Start Again, Please," composed for the stage version, and sung here by the original LP's Mary Magdalene, Yvonne Elliman. Ted Neely (Jesus) and Carl Anderson (Judas), meanwhile, have spent two decades on the road, recreating their roles night after night, although they have to now be at least two decades older than Jesus was at the Crucifixion. --Bill Holdship

Summary: Get the Original Soundtrack Recording
I am not sure which is worse: the atricious sound quality of this version of the soundtrack or Ted Neely. Let me just say that I am a huge fan of JCS. Huge. If you truly enjoy the music, I'd strongly recommend purchasing the 1996 remastered version of the 1970 original album.

This version of the soundtrack sounds very flat. I agree with the reviewer who said they got better sound quality off of their old LP.

Ted Neely replaces (or tries to replace) a wholly superior Ian Gillan as Jesus. Neely screeches and over-emotes on virtually ever song. Gillan (the lead singer of Deep Purple) is a hard act to follow, and Neely just doesn't cut it.

Summary: The original soundtrack is a million times better
The emotive nature of the songs is nearly lost in the movie (which I am watching again as I type for about the 100th time), in part because there is a lot of movement to account for. In the London concept soundtrack here , you get it all from the music and lyrics alone. it makes a huge difference.

Yvonne Elliman was divine as Mary, Ted Neely was visually perfect, if you buy into the "Jesus as benign hippie" thing.

If you're buying it for the movie, then buy the DVD. If you're buying it to listen, by the London version.

Watching this time around, though, the lawyer can't help but wonder about whether there would have been compensation due for detroying all the goods in the temple...the healer wonders how the son of god can run out of healing energy...the dreamer wonders whether Pontius Pilate had a massive "deja vu" before launching into his tirade... sigh. Getting old.

   Summary: Worst remaster ever?
For the DVD version I would give this a 5-star rating. However, as others have pointed out, this 'remaster' actually sounds worse than the original 1974 vinyl version! Everything sounds like it was recorded in a tin can, and there is an annoying silence inserted between every track for no apparent reason other than to ruin the flow of the album. What were they thinking? The way they treated this great music borders on offensive. If you want to hear how this music *should* sound, get the DVD or even VHS.

Summary: Jesus Christ Superstar's Supersoundtrack, a review
When I was first introuduced to the Norman Jewison film "Jesus Christ Superstar" (1973) one of the key eliments of the movie that affected and exited me was the music. It was catchy and fun tp listen to and spoke (or rather sang) of a human Jesus Christ, an idea that I, raised chrsitan, could appreciate becasue it was what made the story what it was, to have someone who was human like us but had a God-Like side to him in that he could bring himself to sacrife himself for the human race. But anyway on to the soundtrack. I enjoyed the movie greatly (being something of a 70's music lover and all) and I began to read about the movie soundtrack and eventually through being a fan of the movie I was compelled to buy the remastered version and did so. Wow! Great music and great vocal talents just like the movie but that's not what I wanted to point out. I just wanted to say that for those that seem to think the sound quality is bad, you must have been listening to a non-remastered copy or something because let me tell you on my copy it was great about 99% of the time! and at the times it wasn't so great (i.e Simon Zealotes) it wasn't all that noticable. I also liked the aduio mixing and there were several circumstances where I was greatful for the differences between mixes on the soundtrack and movie. A great example of this is "Heaven On Their Minds" where it's dramtic as it is meant to be and the vocals aren't so loud over the music at times or "Strange Thing Mystifying" where the music is upfront with the vocals from the start and dosen't build up gradually as in the movie. I also thought the Overature, "Everthing's All Right" and "This Jesus Must Die" and even "Hosanna" sounded slightly better than in the movie where they also sounded very good for the most part. So, all in all, great soundtrack from a great movie, buy and enjoy (and don't listen so much to those who say the sound quality is bad.)

Summary: JCS-Masterpiece suffers from dated audio.
I love JCS. Lets get get that straight first. The original (Concept) album was playing all through my childhood. And I loved it. The movie was a spiritual and amazing rock experience. So, many years later when I saw the original movie soundtrack on CD in a pawn shop, I jumped on it. (This is not the remastered version.) The songs are great, and tonight I just finished watching the remastered DVD. Now, I thought the audio quality on the CD was bad. But I expected this because it was from an old original soundtrack. But now that I have seen and heard the remastered DVD movie, I am blown away! The images and the music are on par with a modern classic! This made me realize that the CD soundtrack was even worse than I thought. Whatever they did to the remastered movie, they should do to the remastered CD! I think I am going to just burn off a copy of the DVD audio just for my own pleasure! P.S. I will be attending the live version of JCS for the first time in just a few days! Then I can compare that experience as well!
