Professional Review:
For better or worse, John Williams has completely reshaped the art of the soundtrack. His scores for Star Wars, E.T., and Jaws are simply unforgettable, and his knack for tugging at our heartstrings is uncanny. John Williams: Greatest Hits 1969-1999 collects 30 years of the composer's best-loved themes into one double-CD package. You'll find all the soundtrack moments you'd expect from Indiana Jones, Close Encounters, and Schindler's List, along with a few surprises (The Reivers Americana-filled main theme and Williams's 1984 Olympic theme, for starters). Most of the earlier works have been digitally rerecorded by Williams, so while you may not get the original recording of these works here, nothing shows its age. And although we really do get only his "greatest hits" (the longest track is the nearly 10-minute-long Close Encounters theme), most of these soundtracks can be purchased in their entirety for the true aficionado. John Williams may be an acquired taste, but this set proves why--year after year--he scores some of the most successful films Hollywood can produce. --Jason Verlinde

   Summary: very enjoyable
This was an excellent collection and my teen requested it but we all enjoy the themes. It is fun to know how many you actually can guess just from familiarity. I recommend it for John Williams fans.

   Summary: great album
This album is wonderful. It has all of the best songs from all of the best movies over the years, like Star Wars and Indiana Jones. I bought it to go along with the sheet music book. It is a fun cd to listen to when cleaning the house.

   Summary: excellent
This is a really good John Williams compilation. Rather than being only a single theme or melody from each of these movie scores, most of the tracks here are abridged concert suites. I usually prefer to hear these shortened presentations of Williams' music; with the exception of Jurassic Park and Memoirs of a Geisha (and possibly the Star Wars scores), I find a full hour of one of his film scores a bit much, considering that a great deal of the complete soundtracks are spent repeating and reorchestrating the same few melodies.

Listening to this career retrospective, I was reminded of just how important Williams has been for American culture of the past thirty years. He comminicates something of the American character in a way that very few other composers have: a comparison to Aaron Copland and George Gershwin is not inappropriate. From the grassroots, backcountry Americana of the Reivers and Stepmom themes to the sense of swagger and bravado he captures in the Olympics theme and the big tunes of Stars Wars, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, and others, it is evident to me that Williams will long be remembered as one of the most important musicians of the American Age.

Movies with substantive and prominent scores are our culture's operas, and Williams is obviously first amongst movie composers. This album is an outstanding profile of his career.

   Summary: Excellent music compilation
Bottom line up front, this is one of the best John Williams compilations available. It has not only memorable movie soundtrack songs, but also his music from the Olympics. While other John Williams music CDs have lots of songs, this one has some of the best variety compared to others.

Summary: Williams is the best there is at movie scores
This 2 disc set has some of the highlights of his magnificent career up until 1999. His movie scores total 80+ and include the 'Star Wars' saga, 'Close Encounters of...', 'Superman', and 'JFK'. If you are a movie goer of any degree, you have heard his work. This is a great set to purchase for many reasons whether or not you are a classical music fan.
