| Joni Mitchell has long dabbled in the jazz world, forging alliances with the likes of Charles Mingus, Jaco Pastorius, and Wayne Shorter, while incorporating elements of fusion into her more intrepid recordings. Both Sides Now, however, comes at jazz from a different angle than the experimental likes of Mingus and The Hissing of Summer Lawns. Here is Joni the chanteuse, tackling smoky standards such as "At Last," "Sometimes I'm Happy," and "Stormy Weather" in the embrace of lush pop arrangements that owe a debt to Nelson Riddle and Gordon Jenkins, though some stray over the line from stately into staid. The focus here is on Mitchell the vocalist, and she displays a real commitment to the music. She has the chops and the smarts to tackle these staples, but at times she seems intimidated by their illustrious pedigrees. Two of Mitchell's own songs are revived here--"A Case of You" and the title track. The results are mixed: the former takes on a new weight while the latter seems adolescent in such mature company. Ultimately, Both Sides Now is more a valentine to classic pop by a woman who can--and should--be off making more touchstones of her own. --Steven Stolder |

Written on November 17, 2006 Summary: Lovely love album A great compilation of songs from 1930' to 1950', all about love and how it goes in relationships between couples; JM. is at her best, accompanied by a gigantic 71 piece orchestra, with Herbie Hancock on Piano and Mark Isham on Trumpet. JM. perfectly combines Jazz ,Classical and big bands sound with her voice releasing an amazing album. If you feel like hearing these great old love songs with a blend of Classical and Jazz music topped by Joni Mitchell' great voice, you can't go wrong owning this CD. Well recommended for the lovers of the genre. If you like this CD, you surely want to check Madeleine Peyroux's new CD. titled: Half the perfect World  Written on November 5, 2006 Summary: Sultry voice, sultry music. I really enjoy this album. Anyone expecting Joni Mitchell to sound like her youthful "Yellow Taxi" self will be surprised--hopefully pleasantly so. I like Joni Mitchell's classic greats from the 60s and 70s, and the music on this album is quite different from most of her early albums. Her voice has a mature, bluesy quality, and you feel as though you could be sitting in a dark, smoky piano bar when listening to her rendition of these songs. I do occasionally take issue with the orchestration of some of the pieces, particularly the very first track, which opens somewhat jarringly with a lush, almost cinematic intro, full of strings. I don't think that Joni's voice is ever overwhelmed by the orchestra, but I do think that sometimes the song itself is overwhelmed by it. This is a case in which less is more (or should be), and simpler orchestration would have set off the songs better. I still give this 5 stars, because, while not perfect, it is extremely listenable, there's not a song on it that I dislike, and it's very atmospheric and romantic. Thomas Kovacich Written on May 27, 2006 Summary: Open a good bottle of red and sit back and relax This is the perfect album to wind up a evening with a digestif or to relax to with a good bottle red, a roaring fire and a howling wind outside the window. Mitchell's gloriously husky voice on this album is one of the few things that goes to show that thirty malboro a day can have beneficial effects. Written on March 21, 2006 Summary: Great interpretation, arranging & orchestration! Haven't seen anyone mention her cover of "Don't Worry 'Bout Me"... My goodness, it's like a symphonic tone poem! It's American popular music of the mid-20th century, transcending its context and becoming something greater and more universal. The arrangement and orchestration are phenomenal--WAY more sophisticated and subtle than Muzak is allowed to be. Then there's the killer solo by the great Wayne Shorter (see Miles Davis, Weather Report)--which is so cool, because it sounds more like a poet speaking in an unknown language, not just another tenor player blowing subtones over strings. If nothing else, Joni Mitchell can say that she's bested Frank Sinatra on the most compelling rendition of this song. |
