Summary: What is with those angry reviews?
I'm not really sure why there are so many angry reviews over the serious attempt to have an honest portrayal of combat soldiers in war. I suppose these reviews are coming from those that accepted (and apparently still do) the propaganda of the day and years shortly after WWII.

"It is well that war is so terrible, lest we grow to fond of it." War is not something to be glorified. If anything, it should be despised as it is a most unjust institution that takes from our ranks the strongest and the bravest. These men were capable of great humanity and/or great brutality no matter which flag they fought under. Letters From Iwo is a movie that deserves praise for trying to show the realistic characters of these young men turned lose on one another.

Everything about this movie points to a desire for historical accuracy. Uniforms, language, weapons, etc. are all as close as we are going to get without actually watching old war footage. No M-48's dressed up to look like Sherman tanks...no, Eastwood actually got real M-4's to role up on that beach. The filming is done on Iwo Jima, for Pete's sake. When was the last time a historical movie was actually shot in the exact same place the real event happened?! Even Brave heart was shot in Ireland!

This is a great movie and deserves not to be overlooked for the opinion of a couple naysayers. These folks are so brainwashed with war-time propaganda that it's a wonder they don't proclaim Roosevelt peed holy water and Churchill was shadowed by an effigy of the Virgin Mary.

In the end, neither side can claim that they prosecuted this war fully in line with the laws agreed to in the Geneva convention (Note that Japan never signed the Geneva Convention and thus was not bound by those rules). The Germans have their death camps, the British have their indiscriminate civilian bombings (before the Germans even thought of "the Blitz"), the Russians have their gulags and firing squads, the Japanese have the Rape of Nanjing and Bataan Death March, the Americans have the fire bombings, two atom bombings, and countless POW executions, the French have their assistance in the "Finale Solution" as well as the rape and murder of Italian women in the Mediterranean Campaign, and the Italians... Well I don't know what the Italians did, but I'm sure they aren't squeaky clean either.

If you want an honest, gritty, and historically accurate movie about one of the toughest battles fought in the Pacific - Letters from Iwo is for you. If not...I believe you can still find the old Looney Tunes propaganda cartoons on line.

   Summary: Great movie.
For me this film is about how soldiers are exploited by politicians. A lot of young men died because politicians wanted to have more power. It's a great film.

   Summary: Why All The Fuss?
The only reason anyone even gave this movie a glance is because Clint made it, otherwise it would have dropped off the radar. Although there were some intriguing moments of fine acting, for me, the movie did not hang well together as a whole. The dialogue was stilted and the filming and direction seemed fractured. This felt more like a play about war, than a war movie. It was very quiet. Very monochromatic. Quite dull.

   Summary: Great until Chapter 19
The movie itself was fantastic. Visually it was beautiful and the audio was top notch as well. The only problem I had was that the disc would not play past Chapter 19 so I had to finish the movie in SD :(
