   Summary: one truly awesome song
I first heard of Patty Griffin from listening to "Top of the World" recorded by the Dixie Chicks. I thought, anyone who wrote that song is a songwriting genius. So I bought "Living with Ghosts." I have never really been a fan of perfectly polished music, except maybe as done by Simon and Garfunkel. Nor has the three minute formula song of Nashville been my favorite thing. I like my music raw. Like the Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, etc. in times past.

I also compose my own songs, so my recordings of myself are just me on vocals and the guitar. That is the way this is recorded. I like this CD a lot. However, there is one song on here that absolutely soars above just about every other song I have listened to lately, called "Every Little Bit." This song, like "Top of the World", seems to go straight into my soul somehow. The melody and guitar on the song are haunting, and the vocal performance is all heart and then some. Definitely songwriting at its best. Probably my second favorite is "Sweet Loraine."

If you are looking for more fleshed out arrangements, I recommend "1000 Kisses." But for one awesome song and some other basic music that doesn't follow the formulas of schlock, then this CD is definitely worth checking out.

Summary: I Wish It Were Finished
Griffin went into the studio, but didn't like the results (too poppy), so they released the demo tapes. And you still have one of the best debuts of the 90's, with at least 5 of its greatest 100 songs: Let Him Fly, Mad Mission, Poor Man's House, Sweet Lorraine, You Are Not Alone--wait a minute, why am I only giving this 4 stars? Oh right, because it's rough around the edges, leaving you wanting more: on Sweet Lorraine, for example, don't you find yourself supplying the drums and bass that come in on verse two, and then the electric guitar rippling over the top of verse 3? Don't get me wrong, I'm all for simplicity and solo acoustic guitar, but Griffin is too talented to have let this one slip away. Maybe one day she'll finish it.

   Summary: An awesome talent....
The above title is meant in the most literal way possible. I found her completely by accident from listening to some bits of songs online just following the links from similar artists Emmylou Harris and Darden Smith. Thirty seconds of the opening track "Moses" was sufficient to make me want to buy it that night and have been very pleased from the first moment I put it on to play.

Patty Griffin is a wonderful songwriter; a strong singer with a lot of emotion behind the words; and an excellent guitarist. That is exactly what you get with this cd - Patty singing her own songs with just a guitar; and it may very well be the most powerful solo acoustic cd I've ever heard.

Summary: I can't stop listening to this CD.
From the very beginning of the opening track, "Moses," Patty Griffin grabs hold of you, and an amazing 42-minute musical journey gets underway. Throughout this album, she sings beautifully, she plays her guitar passionately, and she tells stories that are truly beautiful--sometimes sad, sometimes humorous, always beautiful. And her lyrics are brilliant: "I've seen the look before. Yes, it's kind of non-committal. It says, 'Come hither baby,' but then he's hard wood to whittle." (Has anyone else in the history of rock and roll thought to rhyme "non-committal" and "whittle"?) I don't know much about Patty Griffin. I don't have any of her other albums. I've never seen her in concert. In fact, I'd never heard of her until I saw her name in the Acknowledgments section of a great book called "Searching for God Knows What." I wasn't searching for Patty Griffin at the time. But I'm incredibly glad to have discovered her.

Summary: Got to the party late, but I'm never leaving. . .
I'd never heard of Patty Griffin until about a year ago when I was crossing the Bay Bridge late one Northern California night and "Every Little Bit" came on the radio. This memory always reminds me of the first time I heard Jeff Buckley. There are some artists who defy description and become a part your consciousness and Patty Griffin is one of them.

I went on to buy all of her CD's but this one is my favorite. There are no distractions, just a guitar and that voice. Nothing else is needed.

With a huge CD collection, I am often told that there is NO WAY I could possibly listen to all of the music I have collected over the years and I will admit there are a few I listened to once or twice and never went back to again - Living With Ghosts would not be one of those CD's. It is a masterpiece, a wonderful surprise. No one who truly loves music should be without it.
