Professional Review:
While critics at the 1971 premiere found the work derivative and even tasteless, audiences loved this ardent, resourceful, somewhat brazen, ultimately moving Theatre Piece for Singers, Players, and Dancers. Leonard Bernstein's affinity for his public and for the age in which he lived enabled him to successfully outfit his Mass with a stylish mix of contemporary and ancient modes--rock, jazz, electronic music, Gregorian chant--and place it in a context somewhere between Broadway and opera. Though it lacks the visual component of a live performance, the work holds up well on this Bernstein-led recording, the only complete version on disc. From the popular "Simple Song" to the Stravinskian rhythmic devices and abundant, memorable melodies, the vital creative force of Bernstein is never absent. --David Vernier

   Summary: Massterpiece!!!
I've read the previous reviews and all have seen the brilliance of this work. I first experienced this piece when it came out on vinyl, which I quickly wore out (now Im trying to wear out the CD). Maestro Bernstein really pulled out all the stops for this one!!

I had the joy of seeing it performed in Los Angeles at the Mark Taper Forum (a very small venue for such a massive work) in the early 70s. It lost its grandeur with the scaled-down singers, players and dancers (the string section was one violin!) but not its spirit!

I can sum up my feelings for this piece quite easily; I have been listening to this piece for 30 years now and if Im blessed with another 30, Ill still be listening to it!!!

   Summary: simply beautiful
I was in the children's choir for the Indiana University production of Mass at Leonard Bernstein's birthday celebration in Tanglewood, MA in 1988 - I think he was 70 at that time. (I would love to find a complete recording of our production, but alas all I have is selections for a radio show we did a few months later). It is an allegory that, although based on the Catholic mass, is at its simplest about the true meaning of faith. It was the first thing to teach me about faith when I was a surly, rebellious anti-religious teen, and continues to have a profound influence on my life whenever I need to revisit questions of faith.

I highly recommend this CD for everyone, and would recommend even more any opportunity to see it performed on stage (or, best of all, a chance to be a part of a performance).

   Summary: brilliant, always fresh
My first introduction to Mass came when I played it in marching band in high school. Of course, having only about 8-10 minutes to perform, we only chose selections from Bernstein's work--including parts of Things Get Broken, A Simple Song, Agnus Dei, Sanctus, and the Offertory--which was enough to get me hooked and to make me buy the entire recording. No words can really and truly describe the beauty and brilliance of this work or do it any justice at all. I've been listening to it now for over three years, and it never grows old; it always seems fresh in some way. And I constantly discover some new idiosyncracy that I hadn't heard before and am completely blown away. The Offertory, Things Get Broken, and A Simple Song remain among my favorites, but to focus on only a handful of songs is to ignore the breadth and depth of this composition, covering the gamut of musical genres. Moreover, its treatment of key issues of human existence are truly insightful. My political views are the diametric opposite of Bernstein's, but I cannot help agreeing with at least some of the substance of Mass, especially on the importance and status of faith in our lives and in our nation. In short, as far as I'm concerned, this is one of the most important works of the past thirty-or-so years, and probably one of the best and most brilliant, too.

   Summary: the wobbling man
The Mass cannot be taken out of its context. DC needed a big cultural mausoleum, and JFK's death created the opportunity to build one. Jackie O. commissioned fellow 60's icon Leonard Bernstein to write a theater piece for its dedication. (Something like being commissioned to present the first gladiator show at the new Roman Coliseum.)

After you factor in the kharmic vibes of 1970, then the mass makes a bit more sense. It's not unfair or an insult to compare this with Hair, or Jesus Christ Superstar, or even Tommy. The Mass, however, is not intended for commercial success.

From a theological angle, I find it a generation out of synch with contemporary Catholicism. The parable seems one of a disillusioned clergy in a disillusioned Catholic church. The incumbent CEO of that organization has reinvigorated it, while positioning it for growth, ecumenical alliances and a global workforce.

Bernstein's Mass is deeply spiritual, and his intent was to present "the crisis of the human spirit" while transcending it through musical drama. Bernstein was a genius. Sometimes, this is mad-genius, like Richard Burton's drunk-driving in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" It can also be real pretty, since the man knows the symphony, knows the theater and knows the family,

   Summary: Amazing!
The majority of the reviewers of this piece chose to comment on the music found on this album, which is suberb unto itself and worth the cost of the CD. However, Bernstien did not write this music for the sound. He wrote it for the impact. His skillful mix of styles and cultures refresh the ear at every turn, there is no banal repetition. His masterful use of soloists v. ensembles brings about a complex sound that enchants the soul. But Bernstien makes a point. He is voicing to the world a cry of condemnation. I believe he is showing us the folly of our religion, and how organization is no match for the awesome power of God. He is denouncing "fair weather Christians" and "touchy-feely" religion as inane substitutions for faithful worship. Our take on this piece should be one of contemplation, to view the world in a new way, and increase our faith. Once again, the lyrics and music are exquisite and most possibly the best I know of. This is the best CD I've ever heard.
