| For those who want the most remembered passages of classical music's best-loved works, here's a package for you. On this bargain priced double-CD, you'll find music from 40 different classical composers; for the most part, the recordings excerpted here are some of the very best. Of course, you only get one Bach sampling (Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, played by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra) and one Mozart (A Little Night Music conducted by Herbert von Karajan), but this is still a nice collection--perhaps the starting point for a budding collection of classical music. This set's downfall? Unfortunately, though the liner notes discuss the evolution of classical music chronologically, the tracks are programmed in alphabetical order by composer's last name. This makes for some startling transitions! Emil Gilels's reflective performance of the Adagio from Beethoven's "Moonlight" sonata is followed by the crashing cymbals and bombast of Carmen's "March of the Toreadors," a recipe for a heart attack if there ever was one. Still, there's something here for everyone and the liner notes even explain what movies this music can be found in. A nice touch. --Jason Verlinde |

 Written on March 28, 2002 Summary: Best of the Millennium: Top 40 Classical Hits This album is a great "background music" album. I really enjoy reading a good book on a sunny day with these CD's on in the background. I even played it at the hospital during the birth of my son. It helps provide the perfect relaxing atmosphere. Written on January 4, 2002 Summary: Relied heavily on reviews for purchase- not dissapointed I wanted to select a "best of" classical music compilation and read through Amazon's reviews to make my selection. This CD met my needs perfectly. If the songs are edited, I can't tell. Many are familiar but not "cliche". The version of "Canon in D" included is a little too fast for my tastes, and that is my only dissapointment. Transistion from song to song is smooth with the exception of the sleep-inducing "Moonlight Sonata" being immediately followed by the bombastic "March of the Toreadors". The use of human voice (opera) is limited, I feel, to those songs which were originally written to include it. (Ex: Halleluja Chorus). Written on December 8, 2001 Summary: An Ideal Classical Introduction I've always been a lover of classical music, but at the age of 16, I didn't have quite the experience with it I wanted. I could sing along with any famous classical piece, but get me to name the title or the composer, and I'd be at a complete loss. Then this CD came into my life. I recognized about half of the songs, and they all appealed to me. What to do? Of course I bought it straightaway. ^_^ Let me tell you, I was not disappointed. I'd encountered the vast majority of these pieces before, and I liked amost every one. Though some of the songs are not the composers' best in my opinion, and though many of the pieces are not in their complete form, it is a great boost for the beginning classical collector's shelf. =)  Written on September 19, 2001 Summary: DON�T BUY IT! Like many of you, when I first bought this, I was new to classical music. Since it had a good customer rating, I thought it would be a good purchase. It was a waste of money. Half the songs on the CD are songs that have been worn out by commercials and other Hollywood productions (like the "Lone Ranger" song). The biggest problem with this CD set is that most of the songs are incomplete. And even those incomplete songs contain variations of the same worn out classical tunes. This CD set is definitely not worth the money. Written on August 13, 2001 Summary: terrific value for a collection of the world's best This two disc sets is honestly one of the best purchases that I made to add to my classical music collection. From Placido Domingo's rendition of the popular "Nessun Dorma" to Liszt's "Liebestraume," these discs contain some of the greatest classical pieces that have appeared on television and the film arena. The booklet gives brief explanations of where each musical piece can be found. For instance, Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries became well known after it was utilized in Apocalypse Now, and Mascagni's Intermezzo was heard in the Godfather movie. This is truly a cd set that you'll be playing over and over. |
