   Summary: Brilliant
Everything about this performance is simply brilliant. In general, nothing beats live music performances. Having seen the opera live a few weeks ago, I can safely say this is at least as good as the live performance.

Perhaps the greatest performers were the Queen of the Night, Tamino and the orchestra itself. This DVD is truely a gem, and a joy to watch. Highly recomended.

   Summary: Excellent!
I was a little wary of buying this DVD from the negative reviews for it, but after seeing it, I have no idea where those comments were founded. I got this just so that I could see the actual performances after listening to the opera, and I was not dissapointed! This is an exceptional production of the Magic Flute, and well worth it. The orchestra is very good. Here's a character-by-character analysis:
Sarastro is top rate; those low notes he is able to hit is unbelieveable! Kurt Moll is famous for this role as well. I especially like his aria and chorus of 'O Isis und Osiris'.
Pamina is really excellent as well. That Kathleen Battle sure has a great set of pipes! For me, the best part for her was in chapter 35: the sorrowful aria, 'Ach, ich fuhl's, es ist verschwunden' -It gives you chills.
Tamino is great, and I like the sound of his voice.
Papageno is marvelous! He was my favorite even when I just listened to a recording of the opera. He's got a great voice, and very funny. My favorite part is when he plays the magic chimes when he and Pamina are caught by the slaves. It's just fabulous! I also love the last piece where he finally gets his little Papagena.
The Queen of the Night is extremely good! Someone else had said she was awful and slowed down the triples in her one famous aria, 'Der Holle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen', but I thought she was exceptional. It's one of my favorites. I have a lot of them, as you can tell. She's not screechy or anything, and it's just great.
Overall I think this is a grand DVD, and I'm very happy I found it. I would highly recommend it to anybody just wanting to see a great production of Mozart's timeless opera; like I was.

Summary: DON'T TOUCH THIS TERRIBLE DVD!!
I was decieved by a review at this site that made this into being one of the best DVDs out on the market. To clarify; It's not!!

It begins ok, with an orchestra that is lively and playful, and a smiling Levine in the grave as always - but the the stage is set, and we find Tamino, who is supposed to be a teenager, as a greyhaired old man with no acting skills. He sing all right, but without feeling and nouance. Enter the three ladies; not bad at all... Then this disaster of a Papageno enters. My god! Is it possible? Emanuel Schickaneder made Mozart compose Papagenos arias so they would be easy to sing, so that he could take on this crowdpleaser role himself, but that was a peoples theater outside Vienna, this is the MET! Couldn't they find someone that could SING and ACT? No, no, no. The bottom line is that he doesn't come through the orchestra at all, and I suspect the people in the theatre heard even less of him.. Well well, enough of that, I thought this couldn't get any worse, but that was before the battle. Kathleen Battle, that is. Its no wonder that there were over 500 employees from the MET that bought the T-shirt with the text "I survived the Battle". Off stage she was rumored to be absolutely horrible to people. But enough of that; Her singing is not all that good either, and all the strange faces she makes while she sings; I mean, come on! How is anyone gonna belive that? Theres no room for acting when we clearly can see that the only thing she is thinking of is her next frase. Sorry! No points from me.

The only thing in this DVD which is worth mentioning in the positive direction is the Sarastro's deep notes. That is truely amazing. His low notes are more strong in volume than any of his other notes. That was quite impressive.

If there is one recording of the magic flute I recommend, it is Ingmar Bergman's production from 1974, wich was the breakthrough of Håkan Hagegaard as Papageno. If you can bear the swedish language, and get a good translation at a subtitle, you are in for a treat.

PENCIER!

Summary: The Queen of the night saves the day!
Amazing singing...

I am not as enthusiastic with regards to the rest. The soloist are good, but each tries to show off his or hers strenghts without relating to each other or the rest of the production.

   Summary: Excellent bravo!
This was the first magic flute production i had ever seen. Don't get me wrong the production is wonderful but as in all performances it has it's flaws. Here is a list of characters and how i thought of them:
Tamino:very good especially in "zu hilfe"
Pamina:good but kind of slow and dragging
Papagano:good yet bad
Queen of the night:lucianna serra is a godess as the queen of the night and sings the part superbly(as in the phillips recording by colin davis)
Three ladies:great and superbly magnificent in solos and in a group
Monostatos:good but not good at pronouncing words
Sarastro:very good and very slow
3 genies:not good at all!
all together this was a great performance and mr levine should be comended!
buy this dvd!!!!!!!!!!!
