| Professional Review: |
| Karl Bohm was one of this century's great Mozart conductors--a fact that's apt to be forgotten in the flood of authentic instrument productions, many of them on DG's associated labels. He conducted Mozart with real love and affection, maintaining moderate tempos, allowing each work's gorgeous melodies a chance to sing and breathe. Mozart's symphonic music has its roots in the opera house, and so did Bohm. Listening to the witty woodwind interjections in the finale of Symphony No. 39, for example, you can readily imagine the witty exchanges of different characters in one of Mozart's comic operas. These beautifully recorded versions of Mozart's greatest symphonies belong in the collection of every fan of the composer. --David Hurwitz |

Summary: Another incredible Mozart recording I was a bit reluctant to buy this cd because of some of the complaints regarding both the tempo and "stiffness" of some of the symphonies. But I'm now grateful that I was persuaded by the other 90% 5* reviews! Mozart in my opinion was a master at both tempo and volume, not in an absolute sense, but rather a relative one. In other words the tempo and volume of one part relative to that of another in the same piece or movement. And Bohm brings this out quite well. It this variation of intent, mood, tempo, etc. that make Mozart's symphonies timeless works of art. I see his symphonies as a metaphor for life itself. Finally, although I'm content with this recording's version of the "Jupiter Symphony", I find the version recorded by Fritz Reiner and the Chicago Symphony (RCA 6376) as quite stunning despite having been recorded almost half a century ago. Summary: BEAUTIFUL! BUY THIS RECORD! Symphony 41 is my favorite symphony of all time and this is the best recording of it that I have heard to date. It is emotionally moving and vibrant and is definitely worth the purchase! The last two movements are my special favorites, but also the first movement of symphony 39 is excellent, as is the third. These four movements constitute, in my opinion, the best of the album but the whole thing is worth a listen. Summary: TRULY a benchmark recording! This is the advertising motto of Deutsche Grammophon, and it is true for this album. I have never heard such beautiful recordings of the best symphonies ever written. (my humble opinion ;) ) In addition to the music, the jacket contains interesting information on the composer. It seems he was kind of an anal retentive jerk, but I guess it paid off. This is truly a masterpiece, and worth every penny Amazon is asking for it. If you like these Mozart symphonies, take a look at Philips' recordings of 'The Great' piano concertos. I would venture to say that they are a tad better than these symphonies... Summary: A Fantastic Collection of Mozart's Later Works. Karl Bohm is my favorite Mozart conductor, and the Berliner Philharmoniker, always at their best, here play Mozart for Bohm with the same fervor and devotion as when playing Beethoven for Karajan. Listening to these wonderful performances is enhanced by the fact that these last of Mozart's Symphonies are played together in sequential order, rather than being paired with lesser works for marketing purposes. The 39th is performed better than ever before and the 40th is splendid, as if building toward the climax of the magnificent "Jupiter", which must be heard to be believed. Just as spectacular are Bohm's readings of the "Haffner", "Linzer" and "Prager" Symphonies. Deutche Grammophon's amazing Original Image Bit Processing recreates the original sound image of the recording, virtually eliminating any sound distortion and allowing you to enjoy these performances as if you were listening to them in a concert hall, rather than on a 40 year old recording! These CD's should be in every collection of classical music. Summary: not too bad This set by Bohm is OK, and the price in particular I can appreciate, but I don't really understand the very glowing reviews. The reviews were a big reason I went for this set - outside of the price. My only other reference is Tate and the English Chamber Orchestra 40, 41, and there is absolutely no comparison to the Bohm 40, 41. Tate completely blows Bohm away. To me Bohm is nothing but strings with a little percussion. It couldn't just be my sound system because it's with this same system that I listen to Tate. So, go for Bohm for the price and it you mostly enjoy Mozart's string arrangements. I wished I had tried Karajan. |
