| Professional Review: |
| Ry Cooder has done some of the best soundtracks in the last 20 years or so (I wouldn't live without The Long Riders or the two-disc Music By Ry Cooder compilation, either)--most of them superior to the movies. (Sorry about that, Walter Hill--but it's true.) His lonesome, steel-guitar music for Wim Wenders' Paris, Texas is one of those cases where the movie and its music are equally great. I can't imagine one without the other. Every time I hear Cooder's opening theme, I see those wide western spaces and Travis (Harry Dean Stanton) wandering through them; and every time I see a still from the movie, I can hear Cooder's music playing in my head. --Jim Emerson |

Summary: one of my favorites this is some of the most beautiful, haunting, and simply flat-on-your-face in the dirt honest music I have ever heard. I am an amateur low-budget filmmaker, and I stole a couple of tracks to put behind my little film because it is so rich and effluvient. It makes me cry to listen to parts of this album. I'm not sure what the reviewer above missed in the album, but perhaps she was expecting something else. It is very loose, very sparse, quiet, tinged with desert slide guitar and mexican border breeziness. And Harry Dean Stanton sings - how can you resist that?. It is a very personal musical experience for me, but some just may not get into it. I hate soundtracks, but this one is essential listening for me. Summary: SIMPLY GREAT! Ry Cooder's use of the slide guitar and dobro (one of he finest instruments in the solar system) captures the mood of the film like no other soundtrack I have heard! The loneliess and complexities of the character, Travis, can be felt through the musical notes. Harry Dean Stanton's piece on the disc is awesome as it preserves a major scene n the film on record. PARIS, TEXAS is a masterpiece from the master, Wim Wenders. This german maestro of the camera captures the soul of the west better than many American directors could hope for! See the film, get the soundtrack. This s a VERY SPECIAL masterpiece! Summary: Maybe an apt soundtrack, but dull as dust as music Amazon listed this a few months back as an essential recording for any complete collection. Based on that and some 5 star reviews I bought it. In terms of disappointment, this one ranks up there with Chris Whitley's Din of Ecstacy. I can imagine how this sound track might set just the right mood for a depressing movie set in a god-forsaken, wind-blown town on the Texax prarie. After a second listening, it's one place I know I never want to go again. Summary: The soundtrack for your mind if you enjoy the southwest I think maybe I first heard this music from some documentary or maybe even in my own mind as I made up the notes driving accross the country enroute to Tucson Arizona. I know that Ry Cooder was the first to put the notes to a tape for the movie Paris, Texas but we have all heard them in our mind at one time or another. The slide guitar is the southwest and he made you feel as though you are there as you watch the movie or just hear the soundtrack. This is a must have. Summary: Possibly the most apt soundtrack ever made. Without doubt a 5 star recording. The movie may not work so well without the assistance of Cooder, but this soundtrack stands well on it's own merit. To get the most of this music you should see the movie, if only to capture the mood intended, and of course to appreciate the hypnotic dialogue in 'I Know These People'. |
