Professional Review:
This is madness in action. Martha Argerich's Rachmaninoff Third is the fastest and most physically exciting you'll ever hear. She's recorded live, and the balances are a little strange as a result. You can also tell that Riccardo Chailly and his orchestra are having a hell of time trying to keep up with her, while anticipating what she's about to do next--but so what? This is as close as you can come to an experience of spontaneous combustion, and survive. The Tchaikovsky is, if possible, even wilder, with quite a few missed notes. But with an artist like Argerich, you simply can't judge the performance one note at a time. So go ahead: live dangerously. --David Hurwitz

   Summary: Great music - but it's a *Copy-protected disc*
I don't have anything to add to the other (positive) reviews of the music contained on this disc. Even if it is not the best recording of the Rach 3 (I suspect it is) it is still an absolutely must-hear performance.

The only problem is that this disc uses copy protection. If you wish to rip this to your hard drive (for legal purposes, of course) you simply may not be able to. CD ripping software is prevented from accessing track information on the disc.

Good idea to prevent illegal piracy -- unfortunately it ruins it for any law-abiding consumer who just wants to listen to this on their iPod. Be warned!

   Summary: Ms. Argerich shine
Ms. Argerich plays two of the standard piano concertos in almost any soloist's repetoire. She does not play them mechanically or with the standard interpretation. With the two conductors and the orchestras she makes a statement in each composition about the music that is an experience that even those who have heard these played by other reknown soloists should not be missed. She touches the emotion and passion that both Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky brought to the music they composed. Purchase these and enjoy the experience of a musical event, beautiful and unforgetable.

   Summary: Rach solid brilliance
In the world of classical music, recordings, either live or in the studio, can be the stuff of which legends are made. This has never been more true than of the performance of the Rachmaninoff Third Piano Concerto by Martha Argerich on this cd. She attacks the solo passages with a passionate intensity unparalleled in any recording of this piece that I have ever heard. This live performance of the Rach 3rd with Riccardo Chailly from 1982 adds to her mystique in much the same way that the Ravel Piano Concerto in G/Rachmaninov Concerto #4 on EMI's Great Recordings of the Century by Michelangeli does for that Italian legend of the 88-with utterly stunning technical prowess that will leave the listener speechless. Coupled with an able performance of the Tchaikovsky First Piano Concerto, this all-time classic Philips recording of the Rachmaninoff Third Piano Concerto presents Martha Argerich at her very best, and takes its place among some of the greatest classical recordings ever made. It truly is the stuff of which legends are made.

Summary: The Best Rach #3 I've ever heard
Before hearing Argerich's rendition of the Rach #3, I had always agreed with the great pianist Josef Hoffman (to whom Rachmaninoff dedicated this piece). Hoffman never played the Rach #3 because he didn't care for it, claiming that the piece "lacked form".

Argerich clearly understands this piece, and has technique to do it justice. It is now one of my very favorite piano concertos. This is a performance to cherish. But why settle for just the audio feast, when you can get the DVD of this landmark performance through Classical Video Rarities? The visual is as intriguing as the audio. She's the master!!

   Summary: Simply The Best
Recorded at the time Martha would play with symphony orchestras, this recording displays her mastery of the masters. If Peter and Serge had anybody in mind when they composed these masterpieces, it was Martha Argerich.
