Professional Review:
Two of John Rutter's most popular large-scale choral works are paired in this bargain-priced CD. Requiem, his first composition written without being commissioned, is a convincing affirmation of Christian doctrine on death and eternal life. It is also a substantial and sincere work that strives to be widely appealing while preserving a spiritual context centered on themes of light and consolation. Highlights include "Out of the Deep," its modal tune and harmonies giving it the flavor of a spiritual, and the wonderfully gentle and restful 23rd Psalm. Rutter personalizes his Requiem by adding movements not traditionally part of the Requiem Mass--passages from the 1662 Book of Common Prayer, for instance--and this proves to be an effective strategy. Rutter's own, first-class Cambridge Singers are superb, as usual, and soloist Caroline Ashton steals the show with her heavenly Pie Jesu. The Magnificat shows Rutter at his most engaging, thoughtful, and adept. His usual canny sense of tunefulness and rhythmic rightness, flavored with splashes of pop harmony, accomplish his purpose in the Magnificat: to depict Mary's prayer as a celebratory occasion rather than a somber one. --David Vernier

Summary: Hauntigly beautiful and healing music
I have loved this hauntingly beautiful piece of choral music ever since I first heard it several years ago, though I do not generally like contemporary music. In the wake of the events of 9/11 I found myself longing to hear it and pulled it off the shelf. I have found it healing to listen to and am brought to tears during parts of it. The performance is impeccable and listening to it takes me to a depth of experience of music that is rare and wonderful.

Summary: Excellent performances, conducted by the composer
This CD is a welcome mid-price CD coupling Rutter's two large-scale works, his "Requiem", composed after his father's death, and the more recent "Magnificat."

Rutter's "Requiem" clearly shows the influences of Gabriel Fauré's Requiem, composed about a century earlier, while his "Magnificat" is, in some ways, based on Bach's "Magnificat," especially in the interpolation of additional texts. Both are fairly straightforward pieces, well within the range of amateur choirs.

Both of the recordings feature clear singing from the choir, and subtle playing from the orchestra. My only complaint (a minor one at that) is that occasionally Rutter's forces seem a little too small in the first movement of the "Requiem," but the rapturous cello solo in the second movement, "Out of the Deep," more than makes up for this.

However, at mid-price, this CD is certainly a bargain; fans of the "Requiem" who are looking to acquire a copy certainly would not go wrong with this disc.

   Summary: A worthy effort.
All things considered, this is a great recording for the money, if you like John Rutter. His music on this disc is, as always, quite beautiful; just don't expect it to be particularly deep, as is also often the case with Rutter. So the guy's not Mozart, Faure, or even Cherubini, but so what - who is? This is a fine recording, beautifully sung, and (considering the price) it gets a strong recommendation from me. That said, my only real gripe is the singing of soprano Caroline Ashton. While her voice is pretty and she conveys the spirit of the music well, she sounds like a boy soprano, and her phrasing and breath control could have been better. These are small gripes, however, and no reason not to buy this fine disc.

   Summary: Nice easy listening
For people who are looking for nice easy listening, this is a CD that can be added to their collection. However, for those looking for a serious musical exploration of the themes of life and death, Rutter's Requiem falls far short of the standard set by previous composers. For the most part the music is too saccharine, inundated with cliches that remind the listener of Hollywood movie soundtracks. The Sanctus even sounds somewhat like Christmas music.

In terms of the performance, the orchestra and choir do a very good job, and I applaud the choice of soloists -- very effective singing.

   Summary: From the singer's perspective
I absolutely adore Rutter's Requiem. This is easily the finest recording of some of the best religious music of this century. Having perfomed this piece locally, I can assure you that it is carried out with technical perfection. Everything is as beautiful and gripping as the composer intended it to be. Usually, when I am exposed to piece this much, I grow tired of it. Not so with Rutter's Requiem. I am spellbound every time I hear it. This is the sort of album that will do more than enrich your music collection; it will enrich your life.
