 Written on July 10, 2007 Summary: Does not work I had hoped from the positive reviews that this system would actually work and make my backyard a fun place for my children to play without all the nasty chemicals. Unfortunately, the system did not make that possible. It does indeed catch mosquitos. I watched the DVD they provided and could see that it was working in terms of catching the bugs. However, the real test of how well it works, as the DVD points out, is whether you can enjoy the outdoors without getting attacked by mosquitos. Despite running the system 24/7 for 3-4 weeks, our backyard was as buggy as ever. I even used low-level DEET sprays (5%) to see if we could reduce the amount of DEET. They still were bitten. Our nanny, poor thing, was covered in bites on her exposed ankles. We returned the system last week and are back to using 7% DEET sprays on the girls, which works. Written on June 14, 2007 Summary: Didn't work for me Tried it for over a week and not a single mosquito appeared in the trap. I also didn't like the fact that it couldn't get even a little wet. I guess if you have a covered patio or something maybe it'd be fine but not out here in the woods of Maine.  Written on June 2, 2007 Summary: At first skeptical, but now sold on this machine. Behind our backyard we have marshland that allows mosquitoes to reproduce like crazy. This year has seen an especially wet spring and therefore a greater number of mosquitoes are present. Having looked at other models including the higher-end ones (those with separate propane tanks) we decided to take a gamble on one of the less expensive models that wouldn't break the bank if it didn't actually work. Having had this machine now for under a week I'd like to share my experience thus far with this product. After running if for 4 hours at dusk and then checking the catch tray, about 15-20 dead mosquitoes, including pieces of them were present. Having run the machine for a non-stop 48 hour period in very warm weather. What I found was up to 50 or more mosquitoes and various bits of insects, including a few moths were present. I have already noticed a decrease in the number of female mosquitoes in my backyard (and this is after only a few days of use). Even though as the accompanying DVD indicates, the real reward is to eventually break the generational cycle of these insects to wipe-em-out or at least reduce their number over a period of 4 weeks. For anyone who is skeptical like I was before buying a product such as this, for what its worth...it works. At least in Michigan and similar regions in the Midwest, where the mosquito species are probably the same (they seem to get tricked, even without any extra bates one can purchase for it). It has a relatively solid construction, and will even work in rainy weather although one must be sure to prevent the 3 foot long power cord from getting wet if plugged in to an extension. The fan is a bit noisy, but not to the point that it becomes an nuisance. It has 2 active modes of operation (manual) which keeps it on 24/7 and auto which uses the product's light sensor to activate once its dark enough outside for the blue LEDs (when paired with the heated cone near the intake) to attract the mosquitoes.  Written on June 1, 2007 Summary: Catch a Mosquito Definitely a noticeable difference in the amout of mosquitos in my yard, after pluging in this catcher. Works well on my back deck, considering one for front porch. Although moving the catcher to front for a period appears to work just a well. Great product... Written on May 7, 2007 Summary: It does catch mosquitos This product does work as advertised. It catches many mosquitos but I would need at least two more in order to adequately cover the entire yard - our home is surrounded by woods. I am happy with it so far though. |
