Summary: you can't help but dance Ahh....memories. This CD will bring back great memories of dancing the night away. I dare anyone to listen to these songs and NOT get up and start moving to the beat. Pure disco bliss!!! Summary: Ahhh to be 19 in 1977... The 1977 landmark film and this soundtrack that bore its name did the impossible - made Texas youngsters look at young people who lived in New York City as cultural role models, even if only for a brief period in time. This soundtrack is not like listening to the other two albums of note from 1977 - "Rumors" by Fleetwood Mac or "Hotel California" by the Eagles, in the sense that the music from those two albums is somewhat timeless. The music of "Saturday Night Fever" is very much timestamped into the disco era, but then that is part of its appeal, especially to those of us who were college-aged at the time this film was released. Most of the tracks will still make almost anyone want to get up and dance - although minus the wide lepels and shoes with heels so high you'll get a nosebleed. Many people think the music of this film was written for the movie, but that is not the case. "Jive Talking" was released in 1975 as part of the Bee Gees comeback as a retooled disco band, and "A Fifth of Beethoven" was released in 1976, for example. One of the most beautiful songs on the album, "How Deep is Your Love" is more like an Irish love ballad than anything else. "Disco Inferno", the last track on the album, and not even performed by the Bee Gees, has actually become the anthem of the disco era. "If I Can't Have You", by Yvonne Elliman, was the last song on the album to reach hit status, becoming a number one song in May 1979, a few months before the phenomena of disco disappeared as mysteriously as it appeared in 1975. So, don't be embarrassed that your friends will find out you listen to this music. This soundtrack is really full of excellent music. If you are embarrassed, listen to it in your car, in your basement, somewhere where you won't be found out. You'll find yourself more upbeat and filled with the tunes of a time when college kids weren't considered the threat to public safety that they are considered to be today - smart enough for grand jury duty but too stupid to handle a beer. Summary: Damn..what an album! I believe in giving credit where it's due.The Bee Gees piece of this album (4 new songs and 1 song from the year B4) alone make this a classic. But you add "Boogie Shoes" (Originally a K.C & The Sunshine Band B-Side),Yvonne Eliman's "If I Can't Have You" (The original Bee Gees' version was the B-side to the "Stayin' Alive" single and can be found on "Greatest") and the sublime, long version of "Disco Inferno" and you have a pretty good album. Originally released as a double album late 1977,today's CD technology allowed it to be released on one CD. I only spoke of 8 songs, that leaves 9 more really not bad songs. Summary: The Definitive Disco Bible Say what you want about disco music in general, but I think all that really needs to be said about this legendary, all-time classic movie soundtrack is that it is the Definitive Disco Bible. With a few choice exceptions, pretty much ALL the greatest, grooviest disco songs ever waxed can be found right here on the "Saturday Night Fever" soundtrack. It's the album that turned the Bee Gees into music gods overnight, as they came up with *phenomenally* catchy tunes that still rock my world to this day. I don't need to describe to you classic songs like "Stayin' Alive," "Jive Talkin'," "You Should Be Dancing," "How Deep Is Your Love," etc.---you already know 'em by heart (don't ya?). And although the Brothers Gibb are unquestionably the album's main attraction, let's not overlook the equally groovy contributions by such artists as K.C. & The Sunshine Band, The Trammps, & Yvonne Elliman. And, of course, Walter Murphy's classic, funky re-working of Beethoven's 5th is easily the cherry on top (and by the way, whatever happened to Walter Murphy?). These days, the album may be a bit dated (oh, just a bit), but so what? A good song is a good song is a good song, and the "Saturday Night Fever" movie soundtrack has GREAT booty-shaking songs all over it. So get out your polyester pants, your platform shoes, spin the glittering disco ball & summon the spirit of John Travolta---the "Saturday Night Fever" movie soundtrack is pure boogie heaven! Summary: Why the hell did they cut the Bee Gees off at 6 songs? There are some classic songs on this album for sure. 6 of them to be exact. All Bee Gees songs. Sure "Disco Inferno" is pretty good. So is "If I Can't Have You". But everything else is a joke. If you ask me, they should've given the whole record to the Bee Gees and had them do like 10-12 songs. If they could come up with another 4 songs like the ones they've got on here, this would easily be one of the greatest albums ever. |
